TOP PROSPECT IN GORRES-THAI UNDERCARD

PhilBoxing.com

Perhaps unknown to many, a young local prospect from Cebu is going to be trading leathers with a Manila fighter this Saturday underneath the Z Gorres-Deeden Kengkarun card at the air-conditioned and refurbished San Andres Civic and Sports Center.

He is dubbed "the future of Philippine boxing" by no less than Cebu boxing patron Tony Aldeguer, the man who molded the likes of former world champions Gerry Penalosa, Malcolm Tunacao, and Joma Gamboa.

Many-time national amatuer gold medalist Rey Caitom, a member of the elite ALA Boys, will be showcasing his skills only for the second time as a pro when he tangles with talented Elorde protege Janrey Canete in a four-round slugout.

In his pro debut last June 11, Caitom scored a shutout unanimous decision victory over fellow amateur gold medalist Reymund Legaspi, even knocking down the latter in the early part of the fight.

The Caitom-Canete match-up might as well be the card's curtain-raiser, but it has the tools to upstage the two big fights, including the RP bantam championship between Joel Bauya and Michael Domingo.

The stocky Canete is not going to be an easy fodder for the power-punching and talented Caitom. A native of Bato, Leyte, Canete is also being groomed by his manager Marty Elorde to be the next big thing among small fighters in the country.

"We have faced twice in the past as amateurs. Both fights have been close. But I expect him to come out swinging for the fences when we meet this Saturday. He knows how I fight, and should be ready," stressed Caitom in an earlier interview prior to his departure for Manila yesterday.

Meanwhile, Gorres and Kengkaru will pay a courtesy call today on Viva Entertainment Group Inc., president Vic del Rosario who is promoting the fight card, which is sponsored by Tanduay the no. 1 Rhum.

The official weigh-in is set at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at the fight venue, which is just near the Malate Church and right across Roxas Boulevard, some walking distance from the Aristocrat Restaurant. Two of the Viva Hot Babes will again grace the weigh-in as they did for the Bautista-Bolanos fight and will act as round card girls on fight night while Viva recording star Jennifer Bautista will sing the national anthem.

The rest of the card pits Donnie Nietes versus Nino Suelo; Edmund Velayo against Rey Orais; Isidro Lorona versus Lito Sisnorio; and Rodel Quilaton against Gerard Ubatay.
