'PACQUIAOITO' MAYOL GRABS WBC TITLE WITH A SMASHING PERFORMANCE By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Mon, 23 Nov 2009 Tuxla Gutierrez, Ciapas, Mexico:- Rodel Mayol, the “Batang Mandaue” gained not only a title but a new moniker as well (at least from the boxing fans in this town) after winning the WBC Minimum weight title fight via a 2nd round TKO from hometown boy, Edgar Sosa. The fans from Chiapas started calling Mayol “Pacquiaoito” in obvious reference to the Filipino idol Manny Pacquiao who is known for his devastating combinations. Mayol dropped Sosa once in the first and then again in the second before the referee stopped the fight after Mayol caught Sosa with a straight right and followed with several combinations leaving Sosa defenseless and supported by the ropes. When the fight was stopped, there was sudden quiet in the arena. They obviously realized that their boy who won 10 previous title defenses was finally exposed by the hard punching Filipino. Late in the first round, there was a fierce head clash that brought Sosa to his knees in pain. The referee, following the rules discussed a day before the fight, gave Sosa plenty of time to recover. When Sosa signaled that he is ready to continue before the referee allowed the fight to proceed, he deducted one point from Mayol for the accidental head butt. Sosa was so beat up in the short 5 minutes plus of fighting with Mayol that he was bleeding from the nose and mouth. Later, we were informed that he was brought to the hospital for a precautionary check up to ensure that he is okay. After the fight, Mayol was mobbed by adoring fans who flocked to his small dressing room (a converted 14 foot metal shipping container) asking for photos and souvenir. They wanted everything from the boxing gloves to the T-shirts of the team members and even the hand tapes. The short walk from the dressing room to the bus that took the Team back to the hotel was difficult at best because everyone wanted a photo of the “nuevo campion” or just to touch him. After the victory was officially announced, Sosa approached Mayol and asked for a re-match. Mayol gladly accepted but indicated that he wants to see the fight in Manila or at last Vegas. The victory was sweet for Mayol and his wife and not to mention his team. The fight was Mayol’s fifth attempt for a title. It could not have come on a better time particularly after learning that on the same night he fought, Marvin Sonsona had a drawt in Canada and Sonny Boy Jaro, somewhere in Mexico. Mayol later during our post fight dinner admitted that he had no anxiety or fear at all coming to the fight. “I was totally confident before the fight because I knew I was properly trained. I never had weight problems and I was able to eat all the home cooking provided by my wife.” Mayol also indicated that he wants to unify the belts, particularly the WBO belt. “I have unfinished business with Ivan Calderon. I want him first then I want Giovanni Segura for the WBA title. And when Brian Viloria moves up, I want the IBF belt too.” Team Mayol heads back to Los Angeles early Sunday. “I received several calls asking what time we will be touching down at the LAX so they can meet us,” said Mayol. “That is so far cry from my previous fights. I guess people now know that I am champion. And, after a long wait, that surely feels good,” he added. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ed de la Vega, DDS. |
