?MARVELOUS? MARVIN SONSONA VS SINGWANCHA ON ?THE MAIN EVENT?

PhilBoxing.com

A lot has been written and much has been said about the undefeated 18 year old flyweight ?Marvelous? Marvin Sonsona who has a record of 13-0 with 12 knockouts following his smashing win over former world champion Wandee Singwancha of Thailand .

Boxing writers from Cebu who watched the fight believe he is the new sensation in Philippine boxing while others believe Sonsona may well be the next Manny Pacquiao although having covered many of fights we believe the kid is extremely promosing, hits hard for his lean frame, is tall at 5?6? and is a skilful and intelligent young fighter.

Having covered the fights of Pacquiao on the weekly boxing show ?Blow by Blow? from the time of his first fight at the Mandaluyong Gym when he was a skinny 17 year old kid we believe Sonsona in comparative terms at that stage of their respective careers is just as good as Pacquiao.

But how Sonsona performs from now on will decide whether he can compare with Pacquiao although we have always maintained that there can be only one Manny Pacquiao.

In fact, Sonsona looks more like a fighter in the mould of Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire rather than Pacquiao. Besides, while he put on his most impressive performance to date against Singwancha, he needs to be truly tested at a higher level and his handlers need to find out how courageous he is against a tough, rugged fighter.

Pacquiao who was knocked out cold by Rustico Torrecampo after eleven straight wins took a break and then asked his manager at that time, Rod Nazario, to get him a tough opponent over ten rounds which is what Nazario did. Pacquiao won in style and the rest is history.

Fight fans will get a chance to size up Sonsona for themselves when he is featured on ?The Main Event? at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 13 over CS/9 sponsored by Tanduay, the No. 1 Rhum and Pagcor, the Philippine Amusements and Gaming Corporation. The Sonsona-Singwancha fight was telecast ?Live? in Thailand .

As a bonus they will also get to see another promising fighter, undefeated lightweight Anthony ?Rocky? Marcial take on veteran Jack De Asis in a scheduled ten round bout.

?The Main Event? is a presentation of Viva Sports and is replayed on Viva Prime over Destiny Cable. (PR)
