BASADRE OUSTS THAI, PALICTE FALLS PhilBoxing.com Mon, 06 Apr 2009 Basadre. BANGKOK ? Genebert Basadre put to good use his veteran smarts against Maethee Namuang of host Thailand, negating his opponent?s bullying tactics in their elimination round match Sunday in the 31st King?s Cup boxing tournament at the Gnamwongwan Mall Convention Center here. Basadre, a protege of Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar S. Moreno, the Region X president of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines, displayed superior footwork and accurate sniping from long range to thwart his Thai rival, 15-3. With the victory, the 2005 SEA Games gold and 2006 Doha Asian Games bronze medalist advances to the semifinals Tuesday against Joun Buk Hwan of Korea. Not so fortunate was Aston Francis Palicte, the 18-year old hopeful from Bago City, who showed superior skills but was foiled by another Thai, Chatree Gnaognam, trailing from the onset and losing, 14-10. "Alam ko mas marami akong solid na patama kaya lang parati akong binabalikat, hindi ko ma-follow up," rued Palicte, who became the first casualty of Smart-Team Philippines, whose campaign is backed by the Philippine Sports Commssion. On Monday, four Filipino fighters climb up the ring to continue the campaign. Asian Games gold medalist Joan Tipon, 26, will test the mettle of Thailand A's Butdee Chatchai in the 54-kilogram class, while Joegin Ladon sees action in the 60 kg. lightweight category against Amangeldi Hudaybergenov of Turkmenistan. Opening day winners Gerson Nietes ((light flyweight 48 kg.) and Charley Suarez (featherweight 57 kg.) go up against Samoylov Alexander of Russia and Masook Wutthichai of Thailand A, respectively. Delegation head Ed Picson, ABAP executive director, remains optimistic. "We're feeling good, despite the boys' complaints about all the spicy food,? said Picson, who had somebody purchase canned sardines, mackerel and tuna for breakfast. ?No spicy anymore. Everybody?s happy, and I like them this way.? |
