Melgarejo Retains RP Super-featherweight Title With a TKO Win

PhilBoxing.com

Aaron Melgarejo successfully retained his RP super-featherweight title in front of his townmates by stopping the game Judefil Aclo in the 5th round of their scheduled 12-round championship fight in the main event of the Showdown sa Binan held last Saturday at the Binan Town Plaza of Binan, Laguna.

Fresh from training under the wings of Freddie Roach, Melgarejo who fights out of the Olivetti Boxing Stable and a regular sparring partner of Manny Pacquiao, put some new dimensions to his game, particularly, the quick right hook counter that usually finds its mark in Aclo's head. Always exciting as he is, Aclo traded hard leathers with Melgarejo until a quick left hook in the 3rd round staggered Aclo with his gloves touching the canvas and was ruled a knockdown. A right upper counter from Melgarejo dropped Aclo for the second time while the latter was closing in on Melgarejo in the neutral corner towards the closing seconds of the 4th round. In the 5th round, a Melgarejo combination to the head dropped Aclo for yet another time and even though managing to beat the count, was on shaky legs. Melgarejo would finish him off seconds later with another bomb prompting Referee Ferdie Estrella to stop the fight.

In a supporting main event fought at super-lightweight, Dan Nazareno needed just 35 seconds to disposed of Cris Alag in their scheduled 10 rounder. A big right hook from Nazareno founds its mark below Alag's left ribs which immediately dropped the latter for good.

In another supporting bout fought at flyweight, Daniel Ferreras showed his opponent, Samuel Apuya, the power of body punching when he pursued the latter with a two-fisted body attack that had the latter scrambling for safety all over the ring once he felt the power of Ferrera's punches. Another flurry delivered in Apuya's own corner finally dropped him to the canvas. Apuya stood up in time and appeared ready to resume action but looking to his corner and smiling, he surprisingly quit most likely still feeling the sting of Ferreras' punches. The time was 1:44 of the first round. The loss was Apuya's first as a professional.

The super-bantamweight fight between Ronald Pontillas and Richard Laano was a slugging affair and though the game Laano fought his heart out to make the fight competitive, the sting of Pontillas punhces ultimately wore him down. Pontillas hurt Laano in the 7th and looked like the fight was going to end at that point but the latter managed to survive the round. However, the punishment continued in the 8th and last round and a vicious knockdown scored by Pontillas, Referee Silvestre Abainza promply stopped the fight.

In another super-bantamweight fight, Jhuriel Ramonal had a quick work-out when his left hook found its mark on Reggie Benueza's liver area to drop the latter for good in 1:40 of the first round.

Rounding off the results of the other fights:

Jessie Tuyor figured in split draw with fellow Binan boxer Bonbon Binculado in a flyweight bout (58-56 for Tuyor, 58-57 for Binculado, and 57-57);

Rey Sumapig winning via a TKO over Kosta Luzarito when the ring physician declared the latter unfit to continue for the next round (2nd) because of a badly swelling left eye that seriously impaired his vision;

Richard Pumicpic dealt Vivencio Urcia his first professional loss in their bantam-weight fight winning via a UD (40-35 in all judges' scorecards);

Debuting boxer Alan Tadana showed promise to score a UD victory (40-35, 39-36, and 39-36) over fellow debutant Ver Ferreras in their flyweight bout; and

Marc Anthony outslugged Rex Olisa to win a split decision in another flyweight bout (40-37 and 39-37 for Anthony, and 39-37 for Olisa).

The event was presented by the regular TV boxing program ?In This Corner? and made in cooperation with Cong. Dan Fernandez, Mayor Lenlen Alonte-Naguiat, and the Municipal Government of Binan.
