'He Should Fight and Beat Him'

PhilBoxing.com

Who should fight whom?

Oscar de la Hoya?s dilemma as to who should be facing him from the opposite corner of the ring in his declared last fight has been and still is an intriguing subject of discussions among boxing fans.

Oscar?s stature and contribution to boxing placed him in the position to choose who he should fight. The fans, though, hold the luxury of criticizing the soundness of the choice boxing wise.

With Miguel Cotto?s dropping from contention after his devastating loss to Antonio Margarito, it seems now that Oscar has zeroed in his choice to lightweight newcomer Manny Pacquiao. Why Margarito did not qualify Oscar has already explained however lame the explanation may appear to some.

While obviously the physically smaller fighter, Manny today dons the bigger name in boxing. An Oscar-Manny fight brings the bigger money to the table. Boxing is not only a sport. It is business.

And even an Oscar de la Hoya, who has already amassed hundreds of millions of dollars from the sport, would still close his eyes to the consideration greater than the dollars he?ll get for his declared last fight.

Whether or not the fight is good for Manny is not my point. I am looking at the issue from Oscar?s corner.

Oscar has made a name in boxing which will be talked about for years to come. If he fights Manny, he should not make it his last. With the clear disparity in size and reach to his advantage, he gains little or nothing even if he beats a Manny Pacquiao.

If Margarito remains in the high pedestal he has propelled himself up with the Cotto win, Oscar should beat, not only fight, Antonio Margarito for his final performance as a fighter.

A big win over Margarito would be the fitting glue to seal firmly the legacy Oscar has built himself in the world of boxing.

The other ?He should fight and beat Him? ?who needs whom? pairs are:

Antonio Margarito ? Paul Williams
Joshua Clottey - Antonio Margarito
Vic Darchinyan - Nonito Donaire, Jr.
Z Gorres - Vic Darchinyan
Rey Bautista ? Daniel Ponce de Leon
AJ Banal - Rafael ?El Torito? Concepcion
Florante Condes - Raul Garcia
