P213,000 total cash in 17th Philippine Xiangqi Open tilt By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Thu, 04 Jul 2024 Manila---A TOTAL cash prize of P213,000 is at stake in the 17th Philippine Xiangqi Open Tournament dubbed as Thousand Island Cups set on Sunday, July 7 at the Philippine Xiangqi Federation headquarters, Room 806 Dasma Corporate Center, 321 Dasmarinas St. Binondo, Manila. Philippine Xiangqi Federation President Wilson Zhou bared this, enjoining avid Xiangqi enthusiasts to join the tournament. "Xiangqi is part of the Chinese tradition and for many years it has been played in the Philippines and around the world. Now, we have an opportunity to raise awareness for the game,” said Philippine Xiangqi Federation President Wilson Zhou. The event, July 7, 13 and 14, features two divisions, Group A and Group B. Leading the cast are International Grandmaster Engr. Asi Ching and Xiangqi Master Jack Hong. Others competing are chess masters headed by IM Angelo Abundo Young, NM Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr., Rodel Jose Juadinez and Noel Jay "Super B" Estacio. "I hope to do well in this event, 17th Philippine Xiangqi Open Tournament dubbed as Thousand Island Cups," said Young, the 8-time Illinois USA chess champion. The Tondo, Manila resident Young is one of the country's top bets in the FIDE World Senior Chess Championships 2024 to be held in Porto Santo Island, Portugal, from November 16 to 29. During the 2019 World Senior Chess Championship in Bucharest, Romania he finished 8th to eventual champion Grandmaster Vadim Shishkin of Ukraine in the 50+ category. The Champion in the Group A will pocket P50,000, while the runner-up will take home P30,000 and the third placer will receive P20,000. The fourth and sixth will claim P15,000, P10,000 and P8,000, respectively.
