NM Jasper Faeldonia rules IIEE chess tourney

PhilBoxing.com

Manila---National Master (NM) Jasper Faeldonia of Manila confirmed his new status as the next big thing in men’s chess after capturing the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines Inc. (IIEE) Labor Day Metro Central Chapter Chess Tournament at the 4th floor IIEE Bldg. in Monte de Piedad Street, Cubao, Quezon City on Wednesday, May 1.

The 19-year-old Faeldonia, the top player of Ateneo de Manila University chess team, defeated Kritz Albelar to clinch the crown with 5.5 points.

The feat also came with the P5,000 top purse, a trophy, medal, certificate and Starshots Coffee in an event jointly organized by IIEE National Past President Engr. Allan Anthony Alvarez, IIEE Metro Central Chapter President Engr. Paolo Tolentino, IIEE MCC Board of Director Engr. Dionisio Urbina Jr., IIEE MCC Chairman Chess Games Engr. Evartizon Tizon and Engr. Art Maurera of Eurolux.

Needing a victory to win it all, Faeldonia displayed grace under pressure against Albelar, the 2019 Singapore National Age Group Chess Championships Co-Champion, by snatching a pawn early and using it to create central passed pawn that forced his rival to give up a piece to prevent it.

It was all Faeldonia from there.

Participated by engineers from different fields of engineering, the event was also open to their family members who wanted to join the 1-day tournament with a time control of seven minutes plus 5 seconds increment backed by IIEE Branding and Promotion Committee Vice Chairman Engr. Ervin Fernandez of Genikos, Engr. Norberto De Jesus, Mr. Travis Vincent Chua of Starshots Coffee, 13-time Philippine Open champion Grandmaster (GM) Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., Mr. Jessie Villasin and Bayanihan Chess Club.

“It was a blessing to win here,” said the Odiongan, Romblon native Faeldonia, who thanked his family and Ateneo program director International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia.

"National Master Jasper Faeldonia garnered 5.5 points with 5 wins, 1 draw, and zero losses to bag the championship crown of the latest Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. 2024 Metro Central Chapter Labor Day Chess Tournament, which was held in the IIEE Building. Monte de Piedad St. Cubao, Quezon City," said proud father Engr. Ernie Faeldonia.

Reigning Asian Seniors 65 over category back-to-back champion International Master (IM) Jose Efren Bagamasbad, Andrew Elpedes and Michael Angelo Palma occupied the second to fourth spots with 5.0 points each. Bagamasbad received P3,000, Elpedes pocketed P2,000 while Palma got P1,000 for his efforts.

Albelar, Michael Suacillo, Jerick Faeldonia and Jose Villaceran wound up fifth, sixth, seventh and eight with identical 4.5 points followed by ninth Joselito Alejano, tenth Arnold Dableo and eleventh Michael Manubay who got 4.0 points apiece.
Suacillo won P1,000 for winning top IIEE player award while Manubay got the top senior award.
