Cavite takes down Surigao, Cagayan in PCAP By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Thu, 09 Nov 2023 MANILA---The Cavite Spartans scored a huge twin kill last Wednesday, November 8 in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online tournament being held at Chess.com Platform. Thus, Cavite Spartans continued its momentum after extending its winning streak to ten games. After blasting the Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates, 17-4, in the opener and the last game of the Inter Division meet, the Cavite chessers crippled the Cagayan Kings, 14.5-6.5, in the nightcap at the start of 2nd Elimination Round of the Northern Division to raise their total to 15 wins against 3 losses. The Joel Delfin and Benjie Ramos Bercadez-coached squad remained in solo third place in the Northern Conference standings with a 15-3 win-loss record behind 1st place Pasig City King Pirates (18-0) and the 2nd place San Juan Predators (16-2). Pasig City King Pirates defeated Toledo-Xignex Trojans, 16.5-4.5, and Isabela Knights of Alexander, 15-6, while San Juan Predators toppled Davao Durianburg Stallions, 17-4, and Quezon City Simba's Tribe, 16.5-4.5. According to Delfin, the Cavite team stands a good chance to even win the PCAP crown “if we can maintain our performance.” “Our team has good chemistry, playing with no pressure at all. We just enjoy every match – either we win or we learn,” added Bercadez. Cavite walloped Surigao in blitz event, 6-1, with full points each from Jovert Valenzuela (Board 1), Melizah Ruth Carreon (Board 3), WIM Marie Antoinette San Diego (Board 5), Jayson Visca (Board 6) and Renie Malupa (Board 7) and split by IM Oleg Badmatsyrenov (Board 2) and GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. (Board 4). The Spartans also dominated Surigao in rapid event, 11-3, following full two pointers each from Badmatsyrenov, WIM Bernadette Galas, Antonio, Paraguya and Mirano and split by NM Raymond Salcedo. Board 6 Alexis Emil Maribao, however, were stunned by Rhenz Rhean Auza. After their blitz encounter ended in a 3.5-all deadlock, Badmatsyrenov destroyed Jake Tumaliuan in their rapid duel to power Cavite to a 11-3 thrashing of Cagayan. Badmatsyrenov also got help from San Diego, FM Carlos Edgardo Garma, Paraguya and Maribao and split by Kevin Mirano. San Diego trounced April Joy Ramos, Garma outpointed Jose Jude Ulanday, Paraguya crushed Alexander Jude Malabad, Maribao subdued Robert Mania and Mirano drew with Bancelie Fernandez. "It was a tough match," said San Diego, who beat NM Rogelio Enriquez Jr. of Surigao in 26 moves of London Jobava System in the blitz portion. PCAP, the country’s first play-for-pay league, is headed by PCAP President Atty. Paul Elauria, chairman Michael Angelo Ong Chua, PCAP treasurer Atty. Arnel Batungbakal and Technical Committee chairman Engr. Jojo Buenaventura and sponsored by San Miguel Corporation, Ayala Land, Buenaviel and PCWorx and sanctioned by the Games and Amusement Board (GAB), headed by Chairman Atty.
