MANILA---After becoming co-champion (2nd place after the tie break was applied) in the Elementary Division of the Asenso Misamis Occidental National Open Chess Tournament, which was held recently (July 8 and 9) at the Aya Hotel & Residences in Clarin, Misamis Occidental, PH woodpusher Ashzley Aya Nicole Paquinol is set to compete in the Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship in Hainan, China.
There will be 12 categories, and is scheduled from August 3 to 11 at the Changjiang Chess Bay in Hainan, Province, China.
The 12 year old Paquinol, a 1st year high school student of Corpus Christi School in Cagayan de Oro City, aims to raise her rating to more than 2000, to put her closer to the coveted Woman Fide Master title.
"I hope to do well in this event," said Paquinol.
Paquinol, who learned the rudiments of the chess game at the age 8, brought home a total of four medals in the Under-12 Girls category at the 21st ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships 2023 last June 25.
Paquinol won the individual gold medal in the rapid event. She has also won a silver medal in the team event of Standard, Rapid and Blitz competition.
Paquinol is on a rigid training under the guidance of her personal coach Fide Master Nelson Villanueva.-Marlon Bernardino-
