SPORTSCLOPEDIA 47: CHARLY SUAREZ WANTS TO FIGHT HIS OLYMPIC NEMESIS THEN SHOOT FOR THE WORLD TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

Charly Suarez.

Charly Suarez was a competitor at the 2016 Rio Olympics and a three-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist when he fought as an amateur. His dream is to face British Joe Cordina, the foe who beat him in the Rio Olympics by a split decision. If he beats Cordina, he said he will shoot for the world title.

Cordina was defeated by Hurshid Tojibaev of Uzbekistan in the Round of 16 in Rio de Janeiro. Now at age 31, Cordina from Cardiff, Wales held the IBF super-featherweight title in 2022. He was also the British and Commonwealth lightweight champion between 2018 and 2019.

As an amateur, he won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and gold at the 2015 European Championships, both in the lightweight division.

Cordina now has a professional record of 15-0 with 9 KOs. Cordina will face Shavkat Rakhimov of Tajikistan on April 22, 2023 at the Cardiff International Arena, Cardiff, Wales for the IBF super featherweight title.

Suarez shocked hometown favorite Paul Fleming with a 12th round technical knockout and seized three regional titles at the Kevin Betts Stadium in Sydney, Australia last March 15.

Suarez hit Fleming with a savage left hook that floored the Australian to the mat. Fleming got up but before he could shake the cobwebs in his head, Suarez sent a flurry of punches which the Aussie couldn't defend and referee Pat O’Connor stopped the fight at 1:58 remaining of the 12th and final round.

He won the IBF Inter-Continental Super Featherweight title, IBO Inter-Continental Super Featherweight title, WBA Oceania Super Featherweight title, and WBC Asian Boxing Council Super Featherweight title.

* * *

Suarez also remained undefeated with a slate of 15-0 with nine knockout wins, while Fleming suffered his first defeat now with a 28-1-1 with 18 KOs record.

* * *

Suarez, age 34, is from Sawata, Davao del Norte, and is an orthodox fighter. The southpaw Fleming, also age 34, hails from Tully, Queensland.

Suarez launched a flurry of combinations forcing referee Pat O’Connor to stop the bout at the 1:58 mark of the 12th round.

When the fight was stopped, Fleming was way ahead in the judges' scorecards which was doubtful for the Filipino supporters. Judge Dean Cambridge scored the bout 106-103, Mick Heafey 107-102, and Richard Israel with 108-101 in favor of Fleming. All three judges are Australians.
