Marvin returns to SEA Games

PhilBoxing.com

John Marvin.
Fil-British fighter John Marvin has locked up a slot in the 80kg division on the Philippine boxing team competing in the SEA Games in Cambodia on May 5-17 and flew in from London last Tuesday to report to training camp in Baguio. ABAP secretary-general Marcus Manalo confirmed Marvin’s participation which will be his third in the event. in his SEA Games debut in 2017, Marvin bagged the gold.

Marvin, 30, turned pro last year and picked up two wins, both by first round knockout in Portslade, England. He stopped Hari Simran Singh in 45 seconds and Nishant Sharma in 72 seconds. His last stint with the national team was in the 2019 SEA Games where he lost to Vietnam’s Dinh Hoang Truong on a split decision.

“My focus is on the SEA Games,” said Marvin. “As for my two pro fights, it was just business. I believe returning to the (Philippine) team will be more beneficial and will improve my ability even more. The pro journey was OK but I’m happy to be back. After the SEA Games, I’ll fight in the Asian Games to qualify for the Olympics.”

Marvin said he’s in contact with national teammate Eumir Marcial who’s managed by MP Promotions. “I’m watching Eumir and I follow him, speak to him regularly,” he said. “Eumir’s like my brother and I’d like to be managed by his group. I’m ready for anything.”

Marvin’s mother Teresita Tupas is from Pampanga and he described her as his No. 1 fan. “My mum is a massive supporter of mine,” he said. “Everything I do, I want to do for her and my family to make our people proud. I have relatives in the Philippines with my nanay, ate and all my cousins.” Marvin’s father John, Sr. is an English retired professional singer, former cruise director and a yacht master. Marvin is the first Fil-foreigner to box for the Philippines since Christopher Camat in the 2004 Olympics.
