Top players to see action in P105,000 Super Chess Tournament

MANILA--- The cream of the crop in Metropolis chess scene, from the upstarts to rising stars and veterans, will test each other’s mettle in the 105,000Php Super Chess Tournament dubbed as 2023 Balinas Open Rapid Chess Tournament set to kick off on March 18, Saturday, 9am at the 2nd floor Open Kitchen Foodhall, Rockwell Business Center, Sheridan Street, Mandaluyong City.

13-time Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. and reigning Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster Darwin Laylo, (2022) Auckland, New Zealand Asian Senior 65yrs old over category champion International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad and 8-time Illinois, USA chess champion International Master Angelo Young lead the cast of strong contenders in the Open division.

Expected to give them a run for their money are the likes of International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia, International Master Rolando Nolte, International Master Ronald Bancod, FIDE Master David Elorta, FIDE Master Christopher Castellano, 1996 Philippine Junior champion NM Robert Suelo Jr., and National Master Romeo Alcodia.

The rising non-master hopefuls to watch out for in the Open section led by CM Jerry Areque, CM Genghis Imperial, NT/NA Glenn Hullana Garcia, Eduardo Campos Jr., Noel Jay Estacio, Richard Manzano and Atty. Rodolfo Enrique "Rudy" Rivera.

The total fund prize of 105,000Php shall be up for grabs for the winners in this 7-round Swiss system competition that will run for one day. This is sponsored by the generous Balinas family which will coincide with the birthday celebration of the late father GM Rosendo Balinas Jr. – Mr.Rosendo Balinas Sr. and GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr.

The champion will take home 20,000Php, while second to fifth will get 10,000Php, 7,000Php, 5,000Php and 3,000Php respectively. While the 6th to 20th placers will pocket 1,000Php each as well as the Lucky 100 spot will receive 1,000Php. Top PECA Executive winner will bring home 5,000Php.

These series of events consistently sponsored by the Balinas family is being organized by Bayanihan Chess Club headed by its founding president – NM/AGM Marlon Bernardino. He envisions a bright future for Philippine Chess by giving our veteran masters a chance to mold and shape our upcoming young players who shall bring pride and honor to our beloved country. This mission shall not be possible without the support of the Balinas family. Please do not miss this opportunity as the event is FIDE rated and NCFP sanctioned.
