MASAM SPORTS 80: MARK MAGSAYO FACES ISAAC DOGBOE FOR THE WBC FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE ELIMINATOR

PhilBoxing.com

Former WBC featherweight champion Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo was ordered by the WBC to fight in a final eliminator against former WBO world super bantamweight champion Isaac Dogboe of Ghana. This was done during the WBC Convention in Acapulco, Mexico.

* * *

The order came out after Rey Vargas and O’Shaquie Foster finalized a deal to face for the vacant WBC junior lightweight title, in the process vacating the WBC world featherweight title he grabbed from Magsayo last July 9 at Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Magsayo scored a knockdown in the ninth round, flooring Vargas with a quick right hand but the undefeated Mexican was simply the better fighter. Two judges scored it 115-112, 115-112 for Vargas while the third favored Magsayo, 114-113.

Vargas (36-0, 22KOs) became a two-division champion. He was a former champion at super bantamweight before moving up to the featherweight ranks. The 27-year-old Magsayo dropped to 24-1 with 16 knockouts, had the difficulty in fighting the taller and longer Vargas.

Magsayo held the WBC world featherweight title he seized last January from Gary Russell Jr by majority decision in Atlantic City. The reign lasted for six months, and after the loss the Tagbilaran born boxer separated amiably from his trainer, the Hall-of-Famer Freddie Roach, last October.

The 28-year-old Dogboe has a professional record of 24 wins and two losses, with 15 wins by knockout. He lost to Mexican Emanuel Navarrete twice for the WBO world super bantamweight title. But Dogboe redeemed himself winning four straight fights grabbing the NABF featherweight title and the WBO international featherweight title.

“A lot of people, they can say whatever they want,” said WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford over the DAZN Boxing Show. “They can tweet out that I haven't fought nobody. But all my career, I haven't seen anybody jumping for joy to fight Terence Crawford.”

* * *

But former WBA regular welterweight champion David Avanesyan readily accepted to challenge Crawford and their title showdown will be on December 10, in Crawford’s hometown of Omaha, Nebraska.

* * *

Crawford is the overwhelming favorite to stop the Russian challenger. Crawford thinks he can use the Avanesyan win to exhibit his deadly skills. "Everybody don't believe that I’m the best fighter in the world until I show them," added Crawford.

Golden State Warriors (5-7) won over the Cleveland Cavaliers (8-4), 106-101, with Stephen Curry scoring 40 points on 16-for-23 shooting, including 6-for-11 from the three-point area. Andrew Wiggins contributed 20 points on 8-for-13 shooting, plus good defense. Draymond Green’s defense was excellent as he finished with 2 points, 10 rebounds, 13 assists.
