Eumir ready to rumble
By Joaquin Henson PhilBoxing.com Sun, 09 Oct 2022

LOS ANGELES. Tokyo Olympic middleweight boxing bronze medalist Eumir Marcial brushed off Steven Pichardo’s advantage in height and experience, declaring himself ready to steamroll his 6-1 opponent in their six-round bout at the Dignity Health Sports Park here this morning (Manila time). The fight will be in the undercard of the IBF superflyweight title match between champion Fernando Martinez and challenger Jerwin Ancajas.
Marcial, 26, weighed in at 161.2 pounds while Pichardo, 26, initially scaled over the 162-pound limit and took about an hour of brisk walking before tipping in at 161.8 from 162.4. It will be Marcial’s third pro outing and first ring appearance since the Olympics last year. Pichardo checks in with an 8-2-1 record, including 2 KOs.
Marcial said from YouTube videos of Pichardo’s previous fights, he’s confident of overpowering the lanky hometowner. “Madaling basahin ang style,” he said. “Mahaba, pasugod, parang Mexican style. Start strong tayo.” Pichardo described Marcial as a “highly-touted Olympian” but said he’s prepared to do what it takes to win.
Marcial’s father-in-law Reynaldo Galarpe, who comes from a boxing family in Cagayan de Oro and now lives in LA, will be in his corner with coach Jorge Capetillo and stablemate Jonas Sultan. Marcial will enter the ring to the music of the Zamboanga Valientes. “Sanay akong lumaban sa matangkad sa akin,” he said. “May skills at technique si Pichardo. Babasahin ko ang style niya at ‘di ako magmamadaling sugurin siya. Dahan dahan natin huhulihin.”
