MASAM SPORTS 55: PHILBOXING.COM WRITER WINS REELECTION BY LANDSLIDE By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Tue, 10 May 2022 This writer, a PhilBoxing.com contributor since 2007, won reelection as Maasin City Vice Mayor for his third and last term. Actually my sixth term as Vice Mayor. I obtained a total of 32,968 votes compared to 7,283 of my opponent former Councilor Ruel Sibi. City Mayor Nikko Mercado was also reelected for his third and last term over former Mayor Gerry Dator by a landslide. Former University of Cebu collegiate varsity basketball player Gani Mercado, an independent candidate, won as City Councilor. Yours truly has been known as a sports enthusiast, placing Sports and Youth Development as one of the top agenda. I have been a Chairman of the Maasin City Sports Council for 14 years and produced gold medalists in national and regional sporting events. We supported the career of international boxing champions Albert Pagara and Jason Pagara and Philippine Boxing Federation champion Adones Aguelo. Under my watch, Maasin City hosted the National Boxing Championships, Visayas Boxing Championships, and Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet two times. For youth development, I have been Southern Leyte Council Chairman of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines for 21 years. We hosted the National Scouts Venture Camp, National Scouts Rover Moot, One Visayas Jamboree and several regional jamborees and scouts activities. In health programs, I have been a Anti-Smoking Advocate and was elected President of the Smoke-Free Cities ASEAN Network (SCAN) Philippines for two terms. The SCAN also elected me as member of the Board of Directors for ASEAN Region. Yours truly was a resource speaker in two ASEAN Smoke-Free Summits in Krabi, Thailand and Penang, Malaysia. We also garnered the country's highest award in nutrition, the Nutrition Honor Award, equivalent to the Hall of Fame accolade. I founded Maasin City College, the only government college in the city. It is now Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) Maasin City Campus. It has produced more than 200 registered social workers, several licensed agriculturists, public administration graduates some of them civil service passers, and others became teachers and policemen. I have been a member of the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) and an accredited amateur boxing judge/referee. We conducted several well-known professional boxing fight cards including the nationally televised Pinoy Pride 44. I was a public servant since 1992, with six years as Municipal Councilor, nine years as Municipal/City Vice Mayor, nine years as City Mayor, then six years as City Vice Mayor again for a total of 30 years in public service. As promised, the elections are over and I'm back as PhilBoxing.com writer/contributor.
