Irish Magno, Eumir Felix Marcial See Action in Round of 16 Tomorrow

PhilBoxing.com

Marcial (L) and Magno.

Philippines women's flyweight bet Irish Magno sees action for the second time and brightest medal hope, middleweight Eumir Felix Marcial for the first time after drawing a bye, in the Round of 16 of the continuing boxing competitions in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics at the Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo.

Magno faces familiar foe, Jutamas Jitpong of Thailand while Marcial is ranged against Younes Nemouchi of Algeria in a round of 16 filled with some familiar names that the Filipino bets still in contention could meet in the later rounds of the competition.

Names as Oleksander Khrysniak of Ukraine, Gleb Bakshi of Russia, Abilkhan Amankul of Kazakhstan and Tuohutaerbeike Tanglahian of Mongolia for Marcial and Changneijan Hmayte, otherwise known as Mary Kom of India and Tsukimi Namiki of Japan for Magno whom they had previously fought in earlier competitions.

Khrysniak, the top seed, will go against the host's Yuto Morikawa while 2019 world champion Bakshi tangles with the USA's Troy Isley, one of the tournament's dark horses. Meanwhile Abilkhan clashes against Fanat Kakharamanov of Uzbekistan as Tanglahian goes up against Hubert Conceicao Souza of Brazil, another pre tournament favorite.

Marcial, if he goes past against Nemouchi, could be ranged against any of these familiar foes in the quarterfinals if they are also victorious. Marcial has losing record against Khrysniak and Bakshi, to whom he was the losing finalist in the 2019 world championship. He however has handily beaten Tanglahian and Abilkhan who he defeated in topping the 2020 Asia Oceania qualifiers in Jordan.

Despite his losses to both Khrysniak and Bakshi, Marcial was still fancied to win the gold against either of the two. However, Isley and Sousa pulling off surprises in the competitions is not ruled out.

Magno, if she repeats against Jitpong whom she has beaten in the 2019 Manila SEA Games women's boxing finals at the same flyweight class, could be facing in the next round either Mary Kom or Namiki if the two also emerge victorious in their assignments. She has however lost to both in recent competitions, although she has once beaten Namiki.

Mary Kom is ranged against Ingrit Valencia of Colombia in the Round of 16 while Namiki goes up versus Grazielle Jesus de Sousa of Brazil. Upsets are also not ruled out.

2019 World women's boxing featherweight champion Nesthy Petecio has racked up three consecutive wins and already advanced to the medal rounds, assured of at least a bronze. She is up against Irma Testa of Italy in the semifinal this Saturday.

If Petecio wins again, she could meet another familiar foe in the finals in the host's Sena Irie who is fighting K Artingstall of the UK in the other semifinals after beating Claudia Nechita of Romania in the quarterfinals.

Head to head, Petecio is 1-2 against Irie though both hold win against Yu Ting Lin of Taiwan, one of the tournament's favorites.

The other Filipino bet, Carlo Paalam has advanced in the Round of 16 in the men's boxing flyweight category where also familiar foes, including Amit Panghal of India, abound.

He will go up on Saturday, July 31, against Mohammed Flissi of Algeria after eliminating Olympic veteran Brendan Irvine of Ireland.

So far, so good for Filipino boxers.
