SPORTS SHORTS 77: GEORGE KAMBOSOS WANTS TO GET RID OF THE LIGHTWEIGHT "FOUR KINGS" TEOFIMO LOPEZ, GERVONTA DAVIS, RYAN GARCIA AND DEVIN HANEY By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Fri, 12 Mar 2021 George Kambosos, the undefeated lightweight mandatory challenger, is vowing to put an end to the reign of IBF, WBC Franchise, WBA, WBO lightweight world champion Teofimo Lopez. * * * Presently, the lightweight division is one of the most captivating weight divisions in boxing. Other than Lopez, there are great fighters in the weight class like WBC interim champion Ryan Garcia, WBA champion Gervonta Davis and WBC champion Devin Haney. * * * Boxing aficionados have called the lightweight quartet as the recent version of the "four kings" which refers to Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler and Tommy Hearns in the 1980s middleweight division who faced each other for blockbuster fights. * * * Ferocious Kambosos wants to get rid of The Takeover Lopez and afterwards face the other lightweight "kings" KingRy Garcia, Tank Davis and The Dream Haney. The Triller app, who won the promotional bidding of the Lopez-Kambosos fight, are now finalizing the details of the match. * * * "What's a king to an emperor? A king might rule one land but the emperor will come over and rule many lands. They can be the 'four kings' no problem but the emperor is coming and coming to rule America. I've already ruled Australia, I came over to the UK and ruled there," Kambosos told The Sun. * * * "Now I'm coming over to rule the US and destroy the supposed top leader, their king, the guy who is holding it down for them," he added. "I've earned it the hardest way." * * * "Lopez has all the belts, he's beat three former or world champions, the second guy is myself, I've beaten two former world champions. Devin Haney has only beaten one, and Gamboa was shot as ever, Ryan Garcia hasn't beaten a world champion yet. Davis, he's all over the place, he's at 130, so he's not really in the mix at 135." * * * "I've had to earn this the hard way. I've been overseas, the US, preparing all over the world with hard sparring sessions. This has been well earned, everything that has come has been deserving, but now I'm ready for those world titles." * * * Now, the location and date of the Lopez-Kambosos fight has been announced. The pair will face each other in a 12-round four-belt championship on June 5 in Miami, Florida. * * * Lopez’s manager, David McWater, recently commented on Ring TV. He gave some inputs on the Lopez-Kambosos clash. "Miami will be great for him, He grew up right there. The family left Brooklyn when he was 8, so he was in that area for ten years,” he said. * * * Teofimo Lopez, age 23 years of Brooklyn, New York, United States is 16-0-0, 12 KOs with 75% KO rate, stands at 5′ 8″ with reach 68½″ and is an orthodox fighter. * * * George Kambosos Jr., age 27 years of Sydney, Australia is 19-0-0, 10 KOs with 52.63% KO rate, stands at 5′ 9½″ with reach 68″ and is also an orthodox fighter. * * * Billy Joe Saunders revealed that he is sick with the flu, and he’s not been able to train for the past 10 days to start training camp for his May 8th unification fight against Canelo Alvarez, wrote Barry Holbrook of Boxing News 24. * * * WBO super middleweight champion Saunders (30-0, 14 KOs) says that he needs to shed about 28 pounds during training, and that’s one of his worries while battling the flu. He needs to take off that extra weight for him to have a chance to retain his WBO title against WBA and WBC super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez. * * * If Saunders fails to make weight, his WBO title will still be at stake only for Alvarez, as he will be stripped of his belt, and he will not be able to win Canelo’s WBA and WBO straps. * * * “Billy Joe Saunders told me on my podcast that he’s yet to start training camp for his May 8th showdown with Canelo Alvarez,” said Chris Mannix to DAZN. * * * “We got no heat, and I got the flu,” said Saunders to DAZN. “10 days off of training. At the minute, I’m trying to get wait off. We haven’t got time to get a game plan yet. We’re still a bit away. I still got about two stones to take off." * * * “Once that comes off, the 24 lbs, then we can come up with a game plan. At the minute, I’m just trying to concentrate on getting a bit of weight off. I’m doing the best I can,” said Saunders. * * * Kevin Durant will not be playing for the remainder of this week and it is not yet confirmed when he will return to play for the Brooklyn Nets. That means he will miss games for more than a month due to a strained left hamstring injury. * * * New Nets recruit Blake Griffin also will be playing when the Nets start the second half of the season on Thursday against Boston, though he stressed he’s not injured. He and the Nets think it’s smart to take increase his workload gradually after signing a contract last Monday. * * * U.S. Olympic athletes are going to be vaccinated for the Covid - 19 virus sooner than expected and earlier than the opening of the Tokyo Summer Games, leaders of the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) revealed on Wednesday. * * * "We are more optimistic than ever in hoping Team USA athletes will be readily and easily vaccinated well before the Games and, for some, likely even before their trials," USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland told reporters after a board meeting.
