Elorde takes a brave step and will make history! By Fred Sta. Rita Jr. PhilBoxing.com Wed, 17 Feb 2021 Bebot Elorde. Gabriel "Bebot" Elorde Jr. is simply known as “Kuya Bebot” in the boxing world. He is the son of Philippine renowned boxer Gabriel "Flash" Elorde. Bebot has been a long time boxing promoter and the president of Elorde International that have already promoted countless exciting international events but this time he decided to push it to the next level and make it a historical event. There are four major sanctioning bodies that are widely recognized and namely they are the World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Council (WBC), International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Organization (WBO). Throughout our Philippine boxing history there have only been four times that a two Filipino pugilists fought each other for a major world championship. Two of them were done in the US and the other two were done here in the Philippines and none of them was officiated by all Filipino officials. The first one, on May 25, 1925, was when Pancho Villa decided to defend his world title against Clever Sencio. The match was held in Wallace field, Manila, (now known as Rizal Park). The bout was officiated by Americans who were stationed in the country. This is also the first time that a world championship was done in this country. After 93 years, another Filipino compatriot fought in Fresno, California, USA. Jerwin "Pretty Boy" defended his IBF Super flyweight against Jonas "Zorro" Sultan on May 26, 2018. The bout was officiated by all American boxing officials. Few months after, on September 8, 2018, Filipino boxers fought for a world championship when Donnie Nietes fought Aston Palicte at The Forum in Los Angeles, California for the vacant WBO bantamweight world title. Once again it was officiated by all American boxing officials. On September 7, 2019 Filipino compatriots once again faced each other for a world title and almost a decade after, the Philippines once again hosted another world boxing championship, Pedro Taduran and Samuel Salva fought for the then vacant IBF world minimum championship. The bout was officiated mostly by Filipino officials with the exception of one Panamanian boxing judge. Our former colonizer had said about us: "Filipinos are so primitive and cannot even govern their own." It only shows we already have gone a long way. This country has produced numerous world class boxers and boxing officials yet this is the first time in more than a decade in our rich history that we will host an all Filipino world championship despite what is happening all over the world with the pandemic. Bebot Elorde took the brave step forward to bring an exciting historical match to Filipino fight fans. A slugfest event would feature the former WBO world minimum champion Vic "Vicious" Saludar vs. Robert "Super Inggo" Paradero this coming February 20, 2021 and the victorious warrior of this historical event would be the next WBA minimumweight world champion. Promoted by Elorde International, the fight will be held in City of Biñan, Laguna and will be shown live on PTV 4. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Fred Sta. Rita Jr.. |
