WE TOO HAVE THE NUMBERS? OR DO WE? By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Mon, 10 Mar 2008 Olvera Street in downtown LA. Los Angeles -- The promoters of the Marquez-Pacquiao II surely know how to hype a fight! Tomorrow morning (Monday, LA Time) at 11:00 AM they scheduled the last formal press conference for the Southern California area for the above-mentioned fight at the Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles. Expected to attend are Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao, together of course with their respective trainers and team members. Now why Olvera Street? For those not familiar with Olvera Street, allow me to give you a short two word description of the place:- Little Mexico ! Olvera Street is where Mexicans in the southern California area, particularly those from the greater Los Angeles area, gather for special occasions. And, when they do, they fill the place to the brim. One should see them on any given Sunday, but the best time to really see them pull their community together is during the celebration of the so-called ?Cinco de Mayo?, the Mexican independence day. Cinco de Mayo, is the Mexican version of our Filipino Sinulog, Ati-Atihan and Masskara Festival combined together. Now, what is the significance of all of these? Fairly obvious, isn?t it? Come Monday morning, the Olvera Street will be filled with Mexican boxing fans. They will be there in great numbers to support Juan Manuel Marquez. They will wave their red-green and white flag while the Mariachi Bands play their music. They will come in buses, in their fancy low-riders and custom painted Chevrolets. From young ones to the very old they will come to cheer : ?Mexico?. Mexico?.. Mexico ..over and over again! That, my Filipino friends, is how Mexicans support their kind. With that, I am calling all Filipinos in the southern California area and places beyond. Come to Olvera Street and show our Mexican friends that we too can pull the numbers. Take a day off. Make a ?sick call? if you have too. Tell a white lie to your boss and take an early lunch. Do anything to be there because we need you to show the world that we too know how to support a brother who is about to go to the battle of his life?for his family, our country and for us. By the way, drop by a ?flag store? or any Filipino store and buy a Philippine Flag if you do not have one yet. Bring it to Olvera Street and wave it proudly, high and mighty. Then in unison, drown out the Mexican crowd with a cheer in unison:- ?Pilipinas?Pilipinas?.Pilipinas?! Can we count on you?
