Asean Chess: Hot streak continues as Paulo Bersamina rules Vietnam blitz competition

Filipino Grandmaster elect Paulo Bersamina won his last 2 games to add another feather on his cap by winning the blitz competition of 4th Asean Chess Championships (Men) title in Bac Giang City, Vietnam on Sunday.
Bersamina, playing under the banner of National Chess Federation of the Philippines chairman/president Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr., earned 7.5 points to win the nine-round blitz chess tournament.
Bersamina, a former stalwart of National University chess team under the wing of sportsman Samson Go is fresh from winning the standard competition, enough to clinched his third and final GM norm.
Bersamina scored seven points out of the possible nine to win the standard tournament (Men).
Bersamina thus obtained his third GM result but he needed to raise his Fide rating from 2455 to 2500 to complete his GM title status according to Fide arbiter Red Dumuk, who is also the deputy secretary-general and executive director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
It shall be recalled that Bersamina obtained his first GM norm in 2014 in Macao (Asean + Age Group) then gained his second GM result in 2018 in Davao City (Asean + Age group).
Meanwhile, International Master elect Jerad Docena, a former student of De La Salle University Taft-Manila and Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna, former standout of Far Eastern University, won the silver medal in the Men's and Women's rapid Asean Chess Championship respectively.
The Filipino chess campaign in Vietnam was supported by the Philippine Sports Commission as country's preparation for the 30th Southeast Asian Games schedule on November 30 to December 11.-Marlon Bernardino-
