ROMAN DOWNS DOHENY TWICE, UNIFIES WBA/IBF SUPER BANTAM BELTS
By Dong Secuya PhilBoxing.com Sat, 27 Apr 2019

LA-based Daniel 'TheBabyFaceAssasin' Roman of Los Angeles knocked down Australian TJ Doheny two times before winning by majority decision to unify the WBA and IBF super bantamweight titles on the main undercard of the Rungvisai-Estrada II WBC superfly championship at The Forum in Inglewood, CA Friday night (Saturday in Manila).
Judges Max DeLuca and Zachary Young had 116-110 in favor of Roman while judge Edward Hernandez Sr had it 113-113 even.
Roman, 28, first scored a knock down in the second round against Doheny and another one in the 11th round with a well-timed left uppercut to the body. Doheny, 32, showed his championship heart by scoring big in the middle rounds whose left cross repeatedly found a home at Roman's head. Roman however bloodied Doheny's nose and put a lump on Doheny's right eye going to the championship rounds to get the nod of the two judges.
The LA based Roman captured his WBA super bantam belt by knocking out Shun Kubo of Japan in Kyoto on Sep. 3, 2017 and defended it three times since the last one against Gavin McDonnell of the UK in Chicago on Oct. 6, 2018.
Doheney, from New South Wales, Australia, won his IBF belt from Ryosuke Iwasa of Japan in Tokyo on Aug. 16, 2018 and successfully defended in once against another Japanese Ryohei Takahashi at the Madison Square Garden in New York last Jan. 18 knocking out Takahashi in the 11th round.
