Jerlyn Mae San Diego gets WIM norm

WOMAN FIDE MASTER (WFM) Jerlyn Mae San Diego of Dasmari?as City, Cavite earned 9-round Woman International Master (WIM) norms on Wednesday in the 21st Dubai Open 2019 Chess Championships at the Dubai Chess & Culture Club in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The 14 years old San Diego, grade 8 student of First Uniting Christian School and product of Dasmari?as Chess Academy put up by mayor Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr., congresswoman Jenny Barzaga and National Coach/International Master Roel Abelgas collected five points on four wins, two draws and three loses in this nine-round World Chess Federation (FIDE) tournament.

"Good news Jerlyn Mae (San Diego) earned 9-round Woman International Master (WIM) norms but she still needs two other WIM norms to qualify for the full title." said National Coach/International Master Roel Abelgas who accompanied the Philippine team in the said chessfest.

Jerlyn Mae scored victories over Shubh Jayesh Laddha of the USA in the third round, Petra Kejzar of Slovakia in the fourth round, IM Praveen Kumar C of India in the fifth round and IM Raja Rithvik R of India in the sixth round.

She split the point with IM Rathnakaran K. of India in the eight round and FM Sergey Naboka of Ukraine in the ninth and final round.

Her loses came at the hands of IM Nitin S. of India in the first round, WIM Angela Franco Valencia of Colombia in the second round and GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami of Iran in the seventh round.

GM Maxim Matlakov of Russia won the title with a superior quotient in the huge group of fellow seven pointers that includes GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistanm, GM Le Quang Liem of Vietnam, GM Yuriy Kuzubov of Ukraine, GM Eduardo Bonelli Iturrizaga of Venezuela, GM Vahap Sanal of Turkey, GM Aleksandar Indjic of Serbia and IM Iniyan P of India.

Other Filipinos who participated in this event were IM Daniel Quizon (5.5 points), IM Oliver Dimakiling (5.5 points), Abelgas (4.5 points), Michael Concio Jr. (4.5 points), AGM Joseph Galindo (4 points), WIM Kylene Joy Mordido ( 3.5 points), Francis Erwin Dimarucut (3.5 points) and Gerald Taguba (3 points).

Meanwhile, seven year old Alexis Kristoff Malibiran won the Under 8 open category in the just ended 2019 Abu Dhabi Junior Chess Championship in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The only Filipino participant placed over-all 5th place over 70 participants from 14 different countries.-Marlon Bernardino-
