NBA -- Veterans Gallinari, Williams key to Clips success By Taylor Cutsaw PhilBoxing.com Mon, 01 Apr 2019 LOS ANGELES -- When the L.A. Clippers traded their leading scorer, Tobias Harris, to the Phildelphia 76ers in a six-player deal last February 6, many pundits quickly assumed that the team would freefall badly out of the playoffs picture. Then carding a 30-25 won-lost record and losing the 20.6 points per game that Harris was averaging, it was difficult to imagine the Clippers holding on to a playoffs berth with the Los Angeles Lakers and LeBron James nipping at their heels. But these Clips have proven to be tougher than we thought and have since thrived in adversity. Since Harris' departure, they have won 16 of their last 22 assignments to earn a post-season spot. They're currently 46-31 in the Western Conference standings and will be a sixth seed if the playoffs begins today. Coach Doc Rivers, who won a title with the Boston Celtics in 2008, has done a great job keeping the team from imploding, but the work of two accomplished veterans is perhaps the largest reason the Clippers are keeping their heads above water --- Danilo Gallinari and Lou Williams. A nine-year veteran, the 30-year old Gallinari is using the might of his 6-foot-10 length and 225-pound frame to wreck havoc on the court. The sixth overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft, he is averaging 19.7 points and 6.1 rebounds per in 70 starts. The 32-year old Williams, meanwhile, is burning up the perimeter with his velvet touch. Through the course of 13 years in the NBA, he has become the league's all-time scorer from the bench with a mind-blowing total of 13.228 points. Besides the individual excellence of Williams and Gallinari, the Clippers are a sold team that plays together, pulling on the same rope. They score 115.1 points, grab 45.6 rebounds and dish 23.8 assists per game. They also shoot 47.1 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from 3-point distance. The Clippers have many important pieces crucial to their success, but they sure would not be where they are now without two veterans playing exceptional ball. Veterans Lou Williams and Danilo Gallinari are two of the biggest reasons why the Los Angeles Clippers are making an improbable playoffs run.
