Berenguer, Fernandez, Amper power Senate past House of Representatives in 3rd Congressional Sports Chess Team Tourney

Leo Berengeur, Roel Fernandez and Alexander Amper came through with victories to lift the Senate of the Philippines to a 5.5-2.5 victory over the House of the Representatives in the just ended 3rd Congressional Sports Chess Team Tourney held at the Philippine Army Gymnasium in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City last Thursday.
Berenguer defeated Ronald Abesa on board two, Fernandez toppled Amadao Naval on board three while Alexander Amper showed superb rook and pawn endgame technique to beat Aina Daras on board five.
Almar Concepcion and Victor Deles also won their matches against Ricardo Bering and Ruel Cescon on boards six and eight, respectively.
Alex Oroceo split the point with Edward Tamayo on board seven.
Marion Ilagan and Melchor de Leon carried the good fight for the House of the Representatives after beating Ramon Triunfante and Rafael Ofilada on boards one and four in order.
Over-all, the Senate of the Philippines chess team under the guidance of Medy Venturina tallied a total output of 13.5 points to retain his their chess title which they won last year.
House of the Representatives chess team, on the other hand notch 10.5 points but failed to win the championship that they won in the inaugural 2017 edition.
No less than tournament director Fide arbiter Ricky Navalta supervised the said chessfest and assisted by NA Alfred Miranda, GM elect Ronald Dableo, NM Carlo Rosaupan and coach Idelfonso "Ponching" Datu of the Philippine Army.
