Broner out to spoil Manny's party

PhilBoxing.com

Adrien Broner is set to earn the biggest purse of his career but insists money isn?t what?s motivating him to engage WBA welterweight champion Sen. Manny Pacquiao in their scheduled 12-round bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Jan. 19.

?Screw the money,? said the man called ?The Problem.? ?I?m going to mess the plans up.? Broner referred to Pacquiao intending to use him as a stepping stone to a rematch with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. He reportedly signed a five-fight $50 Million contract with Al Haymon so the average for each bout is $10 Million. Broner?s biggest purse was $1.5 Million for the Paul Malignaggi outing in 2013 and he?s been involved in three more $1 Million assignments so a $10 Million payday for one fight appears to be an unimaginable upgrade.

Broner was only five years old when Pacquiao made his pro debut in 1995. By the time they square off, Pacquiao will be 40 and Broner won?t turn 30 until July. Experience is clearly on Pacquiao?s side as he has logged 69 fights compared to 37 for Broner. Pacquiao has lost seven contests, three by KO to Juan Manuel Marquez, Medgeon 3-K Battery and Rustico Torrecampo, three by unanimous decision to Mayweather, Jeff Horn and Erik Morales and one by split verdict to Tim Bradley. Broner has lost thrice on points to Mikey Garcia, Marcos Maidana and Shawn Porter. He?s been floored by only Maidana and he went down twice, once from a left hook to the head and the other, from a right-to-the-body, left-hook-to-the-head combination.

Broner has never been knocked out nor lost to a southpaw. In 24 fights since 2010, he battled five lefthanders, halting Robert Acevedo, Carlos Claudio, Guillermo Sanchez, Antonio DeMarco and Khabib Allakhverdiev. ?I?m going to do (to Pacquiao) what I always do to southpaws and dismantle him,? said Broner.

Showtime Sports president Stephen Espinoza said interest for the fight is ?very real? as tickets will start going on sale tomorrow. Price range for tickets is from $100 to $1,500 and there are seven price options. The fight will be available on Showtime pay-per-view. It?s a classic match between hero and villain. Pacquiao is revered as a law-abiding humanitarian while Broner has been accused of illegal possession of a weapon, domestic violence, witness intimidation, robbery and assault. In one incident, Broner beat up a man and stole back $14,000 he lost to him in gambling.

True to form, Broner went overboard in making nasty remarks about Pacquiao and trainer Freddie Roach during a recent press conference in Los Angeles. He said Pacquiao has a better chance of becoming a driving instructor than beating him and welcomed Roach back to the Filipino?s corner ?so we can get this thing shaking.? The remarks caused a backlash in social media. Pacquiao said Broner is ?fast with his mouth? and promised the fans ?a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a fight you will never forget.?

Las Vegas-based matchmaker Sean Gibbons said Broner can?t be underestimated. ?He knows how to fight and Sen. Manny can?t take him lightly,? said Gibbons. Espinoza described Broner as an athletic, quick and strong counter-puncher who can be a problem for Pacquiao. Broner has won world titles in the superfeatherweight, lightweight, superlightweight and welterweight divisions so he?s no slouch. Pacquiao, however, is the only fighter ever to capture world titles in eight classes from flyweight to superwelterweight.
