AGM Robert Suelo Jr. wins Singapore Open Rapid chess By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Mon, 03 Sep 2018 SINGAPORE---ARENA GRANDMASTER (AGM) and Fide Master elect Robert Suelo Jr. of the Philippines stamped his class on the opposition to bag the Asean Chess Academy (ACA) Rapid Open Chess Championships held Sunday, September 2, 2018 at the Bukit Timah Shopping Centre here in Singapore. Suelo, a certified World Chess Federation (FIDE) instructor and trainer here, the 1996 Philippine Junior Champion, beat Singaporean Tan Yian Hau in the 6th and final round to finish with 5.5 points on 5 wins and 1 draw to add the Asean Chess Academy (ACA) Rapid Open Chess Championships September edition to his growing list of chess honors. "This is my best perfomance so far. I played solidly and tactically which won me my final round match against Tan Yian Hau," the former Barangay Malamig, Rizal Technological University Chess Team standout said. Suelo, an active member of the International Churches of Christ (ICOC) in Singapore here, helped the Philippine team (Isaiah 40) win the Nanyang Racial Harmony Team Chess Challenge 2018 Open division held at the Nanyang Community Club here in Singapore last July 29, 2018. Rounding up the top 9 were of Jimson Bitoon of the Philippines (5 points), Warren Lim of Singapore (3.5 points), Filipino and United States chess master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. of the Philippines (3.5 points), Lincoln Yap of the Philippines (3 points), Deng Tiangle of China (3 points), Revin Vasallo of the Philippines (3 points), Tan Chow Yin of Singapore (2 points) and Tan Yian Hau of Singapore (1.5 points). In the Challengers Section, Filipino chess wizard Jayson Jacobo Tiburcio, a primary 4 pupil at Fernvale Primary School in Singapore here, defeated Singaporean Ruben Ho in the last round to create a four-way tie at first place. Tiburcio, Ho, Zhu Lehan and Ian Zachary Soon of Singapore tallied 5 points each. The nine-years-old Jayson, who hails from Marikina City bagged the over-all championships trophy in the 11 years old and below category in the 2018 CAP International Youth Chess Open Championships held last August 16, 2018 in Taoyuan City in Taiwan.
