Pascua, Dimakiling tie for 1st in 45th Selangor Open Chess Tournament 2018

Filipino International Masters Haridas Pascua and Oliver Dimakiling finished in a tie for first place along with eventual champion International Master Marcos Llaneza Vega of Spain at the conclusion of 45th Selangor Open Chess Tournament 2018 being held at the Grand Ballroom, 5th floor, Cititel Mid Valley Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Tuesday.

IM Llaneza Vega defeated National Master Efren Bagamasbad of Quezon City in the final round, to finish with 7.0 points on six wins, two draws and a loss in nine outings in the Open Section, the same output of Pascua and Dimakiling.

The Mangatarem, Pangasinan native and Baguio-based Pascua, on the other hand defeated Chan Kim Yew of Malaysia, while the Davao City bet Dimakiling subdued National Master Merben Roque of Cebu.

After the tie-break points were applied, IM Llaneza took the championship, Pascua wound up in second place, followed by Dimakiling was in third place.

With the victory, Pascua and Dimakiling's performance boosted the nation's morale, said Philippine Executive Champion Atty. Cliburn Anthony A. Orbe.

?Once again our flag has been raised in this foreign land after knowing that our Filipino kababayan International Masters Haridas Pascua and Oliver Dimakiling finished in a tie for first place,? he said.

It was a sorry loses to Chan Kim Yew and NM Roque, who share the lead going to the ninth and final round.

Chan Kim Yew who upset IM Llaneza Vega in the eight and penultimate round as well Roque who shocked Singapore-based Grandmaster Buenaventura "Bong" Villamayor of Mauban, Quezon province. The duo tallying identical 6.5 points after Round 8 on Monday. In other matches saw in Round 8, Pascua split the point with Dimakiling.

Meanwhile, NM Roque and Chan Kim Yew finished in a seven-way tie for fourth place.

Roque, the pride of Cebu placed 4th overall in the huge group of 6.5 pointers that includes 5th place Grandmaster Alexander Fominyh of Russia, 6th place Ian Cris Udani of Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, 7th place Fide Master John Marvin Miciano of Davao City, 8th place IM Emmanuel Senador of Iloilo City, 9th place Chan Kim Yew and 10th place Lye Lik Zang of Malaysia.
GM Villamayor finished with 6.0 points and landed at 12th place, followed by 13th place NM Bagamasbad (6.0 pts.) and 14th place Fide Master Alekhine Nouri (6.0 pts.).

Also with six points are 11th place FM Andyka Pitra of Indonesia and 15th place Sabri Mohd Saprin of Malaysia.

Other Filipino players who saw in action in this World Chess Federation (FIDE) sanctioned tournament are 19th place National Master Stewart Manaog of Bicol (5.5 pts.), 24th place IM Hamde Nouri of Escalante City, Negros Occidental (5.0 pts.), 26th place Fide Master Nelson Villanueva of La Carlota City, Negros Occidental (5.0 pts.) and 33rd place Hongkong-based Edgardo Borigas (5.0 pts.).
