Donnie Nietes breaks camp; Team declares they are ready By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Mon, 19 Feb 2018 Following his usual routine particularly in huge fights such as the one coming up against Argentina?s JC Reveco, IBF world flyweight champion, Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes breaks camp last Saturday and declares himself ready to showcase his talents and artistry in boxing. Nietes for several weeks has been training at the famed Wildcard Gym in Hollywood under the eagle eyes of his trainers, Edmund and Edito Villamor. He spars with a couple of fighters particularly former world champion, Brian Viloria who himself will be going for a title in the same fight card as Nietes at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, CA. Starting Monday, the first day of the fight week, Nietes will just be doing light exercises and focus on maintaining his weight, which at the moment is just about at the fight contract limit, save for a pound or so. Then there will be the obligatory press conference on Thursday where he will finally come face to face with his challenger from Argentina, Juan Carlos Reveco. The official weigh-in is on Friday. There appears to be a lot of interest in the fight card dubbed as ?Superfly 2? that is slated to be seen live on HBO. But the interest seems to be centered on the two top main events driven by the rabid Latino crowd that usually flock to huge fight events particularly when their compatriots are involved. With the fight in happening in the LA basin, the Latino hotbed of boxing in the whole of far western USA, the Latino frenzy is on. Fueled by a beer or two, the fight fan behavior on Saturday night will be loud and exciting as ever. What appears to be a light interest from the fight fans and even the mainstream media and bloggers in the Nietes vs. Raveco fight does not seem to matter to the humble Donnie Nietes. Nietes is all too familiar with the fight business and he fully understands the situation. Admittedly, he his not known to many fight fans in the US because he barely fights here. But, he plans to change all of that by putting up hopefully his best fight ever as it will be seen in a huge world-wide platform called HBO Boxing After Dark. To him, finally the time has come to be recognized worldwide after all the years that he toiled in the shadows of other big name fighters in spit of his splendid record even the great Manny Pacquiao has not equaled. Nietes is the longest continuous reigning Filipino world-boxing champion. Now Nietes has placed his foot in the door leading to bigger and better money fights. A good showing on Saturday will totally swing that door wide open and finally give him the name recognition he truly deserves and the big prize-money that comes with it. Donnie Nietes is ready. His main support team that will man his corner is ready. Now, the only question that remains to be seen is how the Filipino fight fans in Southern California and areas nearby react to the big fight. Will they open up their pocket books and spend money to buy the tickets to see the fight? Or will they again expect freebies reminiscent of the days of Manny Pacquiao in Los Angeles. I, for one hope it will be the former and not the latter. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ed de la Vega, DDS. |
