FIDE MASTER "ELO" MARIANO III TOPS BATO CHESS CUP By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Thu, 30 Nov 2017 Final Standings: (Six Round Swiss-system) 5.0 points---FM Nelson Mariano III, FM Mari Joseph Turqueza, Danilo Tiempo 4.5 points---Alvin Roma, NM Ali Branzuela, NM Marlon Bernardino 4.0 points---Virgen Gil, Jerry Areque, Jerry Tolentino, NM Alcon John Datu 3.5 points---Ruvillo Paulin, NM Rolando Andador, Macwaine Molina, Reynold Miraflor NELSON "Elo" Mariano III made a quick draw over fellow Fide Master Mari Joseph Logizesthai Turqueza in the last round to win the recent 3rd edition of the PNP Chief Police Director General Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa dubbed as Bato Invitational Chess Cup last Tuesday , November 28, 2017 held at the Sports Center in Camp Crame, Quezon City. With the ceasefire, Mariano, Turqueza and Danilo Tiempo finished in a three-way tie at 5.0 points. Mariano, however, took first place by virtue of superior tiebreak points. Turqueza and Tiempo occupied second and third places, respectively. Tiempo, on the other hand, toppled Jerry Areque. Earlier, Mariano, a chess organizer from Bacoor, Cavite defeated Morgan Aguilar in Round 1, Danilo Tiempo in Round 2, Laurence Wilfred Dumadag in Round 3, Ruvillo Paulin in Round 4, Thailand blitz king Alvin Roma in Round 5 before halving the point with FM Mari Joseph Logizesthai Turqueza in Round 6. Meanwhile, PSUPT Jonas Pedro C. Ercarcha received his trophy from National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) vice president Atty. Cliburn Anthony A. Orbe and PSSUPT Joselito Pajarillaga after winning the executive division during the closing rites. PSUPT Jaime "Jim" Osit Santos won the runner-up place in the executive division while National Master Ali Branzuela took the top PNCO award in the event organized by PSSSUPT Michael John Dburia and SPO3 Jomar " Joms" Pascua with Roy Madayag served as chief arbiter. Rounding up to the top top 14 places were Thailand blitz king Alvin Roma, NM Ali Branzuela, NM Marlon Bernardino, Virgen Gil, Jerry Areque, Jerry Tolentino, NM Alcon John Datu, Ruvillo Paulin, NM Rolando Andador, Macwaine Molina and Reynold Miraflor.
