NBA -- Walker's 27 points lead Hornets over Sixers By Eric Biasbas PhilBoxing.com Sun, 03 Apr 2016 CHARLOTTE -- Another home game. Another sellout. Another victory for the home team. Kemba Walker dropped 27 points along with 11 rebounds and four assists to help the playoffs-bound Charlotte Hornets shake off the lowly Philadelphia 76ers, 100-91. It was the Hornets' 13th sellout crowd this season, a Time Warner Cable arena record. It was also their 28th victory in 39 home games. After an even first quarter (25-25), the Hornets began to hit their strides and take control of the game by going to their perimeter attack. Led by the second unit of Jeremy Lin, Jeremy Lamb, Frank Kaminsky and the post up game of Al Jefferson, Charlotte held a 59-50 edge at halftime. The lead grew to 16 points in the third quarter but the resilient Sixers put up a fight. Down by 15 points, the Sixers made a late push in the fourth period and managed to get within four points, 87-83 with five minutes remaining. The Hornets responded with 10 straight points including two clutch triples from Walker to put the game out of reach and send the Sixers to their 11th consecutive loss. "They played really hard. They never quit," Walker said. "They cut the lead down.We just locked in a little more and grinded that win out." With the loss, Philadelphia (9-67) is assured of finishing with the worst record in the NBA this season. "Defensively, I don't think we could have done more," Sixers coach Brett Brown said. "We needed to make more shots. We leave Charlotte feeling quite good about our defense. We just have to try to find a way to make some more shots." Jerami Grant, returning from injury had 17 points to paced the Sixers. Hollis Thompson also tallied 17 points while Carl Landry had 16 markers. Veteran Elton Brand turned back time and scored 13 points and 11 rebounds. Nic Batum overcame a slow start and finished with 19 points and 7 assists for the Hornets. Al Jefferson contributed 13 points and 7 rebounds. Overall, the Hornets outscored the Sixers in the paint, 54-34 and held an advantage in fastbreak points, 25-11. With a 44-31 W-L record, Charlotte is now just one win shy from clinching their second post season appearance in three years under newly named NBA Eastern Conference coach of the month Steve Clifford. The 54-year old coach guided the Hornets to the East's best record at 13-3 on March. The 13 wins are a Hornets single month franchise record. " We have a great staff, great communication and working relationships with the players. It's very much a team thing," he said. This was Clifford's second coach of the month award since being a head coach. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Eric Biasbas. |
