NBA -- Lin erupts for 29 points, Hornets beat mighty Spurs, 91-88 By Eric Biasbas PhilBoxing.com Tue, 22 Mar 2016 CHARLOTTE -- With leading scorer Kemba Walker having an off night, Jeremy Lin took over and scored 29 points on 11-out-of 18 field goals including 4 out-of 4 from beyond the arc and the Charlotte Hornets rallied and snapped a 10-game losing streak against the San Antonio Spurs, 91-88. After the first quarter, almost everyone in the crowd at the Time Warner Cable Arena thought it would be a walk in the park for the visiting Spurs as they displayed their smooth flowing offense and impenetrable defense early on and held the host Hornets to just seven points, 28-7. The Hornets, who registered their worst performance in a quarter of the season was so miserable in the first period, committing 5 turnovers and made only 3-out-of-21 field goals. But then, things started to turn around. Sparked by Jeremy Lin's penetrations and three point shooting, the Hornets slowly chipped away at the huge deficit until they finally took the lead at the 9 minute mark of the fourth quarter. The Hornets outscored the Spurs in every quarter except the first. It was back and forth in the fourth period with Lin hitting the big shots. With the Spurs leading 88-87, Lin connected with a stepback jumper to give the Hornets the lead with 48 seconds left. After misses by the Spurs, Lin was fouled and he calmly sank the two free throws . The Spurs had the last chance to tie the count but Patty Mills and Danny Green misfired from the three point area. "In the second quarter, I thought our second team was basically out to lunch" Spurs head coach Gregg popovich told reporters. " They stopped moving the ball, it was one-on one, turnovers. They (Charlotte) did a good job hanging in and playing hard." "It was a good team win but Jeremy really gave us life," Hornets' Nic Batum said. "He came in and attack them and scored points." "We got lucky tonight", said Lin. "To beat San Antonio you normally you need sustained play for all 48 minutes, solid play. We just had to come out and compete and give everything that we have." Coach Popovich praised Lin, " We couldn't stop him all night. He had a great night. He was wonderful." Walker, bothered by the Spurs' defense finished with 6 points on 2-of-11 shooting. Nic Batum had 15 points while Courtney Lee tallied 17 points for the Hornets. Tony Parker topscored for the Spurs with 19 points along with 7 assists Lamarcus Aldridge contributed 18 points and 12 rebounds, Kawhi Leonard tallied 15 points while Tim Duncan had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Charlotte improved to 40-30 just half game behind Atlanta Hawks and Boston Celtics 41-30 for 5th seed in the East. The loss, which snapped San Antonio's six-game winning streak dampen their chances of gaining the top seed in the West. Their record now stands, 59-11 against the Golden State Warriors 63-7.
