Mavs snap Hornets seven-game win streak By Eric Biasbas PhilBoxing.com Wed, 16 Mar 2016 ![]() CHARLOTTE -- Losers of five straight games versus winners of seven consecutive games. The losers of five in a row prevailed. On Monday night at the Time Warner Cable Arena, the visiting Dallas Mavericks dealt the surging Charlotte Hornets their first defeat in the month of March, 107-96. Dallas snapped a five-game losing skid and ended Charlotte's season best seven-game winning streak. Chandler Parsons scored 24 points including 5-of-9 from three point territory while Dirk Nowitzki had 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Mavericks. Head coach Rick Carlisle altered his normal rotation and inserted guard Raymond Felton into the starting unit and moved Nowitzki to center in place of regular big man Zsa Zsa Pachulia. "We changed the lineup because we just needed a shakeup of some kind," the winning coach said. We just had a really good energy, focus, togetherness. We were playing relatively small so we needed everybody to be vigilant about being on the boards. That's our best chance to win and we did that tonight." Playing small, the Mavericks were able to have a quick start and kept the Hornets in check. The Mavs started to pull away in the second period and frustration mounted on the part of the Hornets. Coach Steve Clifford, Kemba Walker and Nic Batum were all charged a technical foul for arguing calls. The Mavs' defense limited the Hornets to 33 first half points on 26.8% FG. The half ended with Hornets behind by 19 points. "We finally got a good start. We actually won the first quarter. That was a good sign for us, it set us up to play from in front for the rest of the night," Nowitzki told media. "We lost our poise a little bit tonight and it hurt us." Clifford said. "At the end of the day it comes down to basic things, too many turnovers, too many missed free throws." ![]() ![]() The Hornets made a push in the second half and tied the game at 71-all early in fourth period on Kemba Walker's back to back triples. He then added to more free throws for their first lead of the night, 73-71. The Mavericks fought back led by Parsons and Nowitzki and the Hornets seemed to run out of gas as they fell behind by double digits later in the period. "We just can't get in a groove. We missed a lot. Defensively, they moved us around a lot," recently crowned Eastern Conference Player of the Week, Walker said. "We tried to make a push but we just can't get over the hump". " Charlotte is the hottest team in the league. You know they are going to make a run. The bottom line is you have to hold the line. Our guys did. I'm really proud of the way they played." remarked coach Carlisle. Walker overcame a poor start and finished with 25 points and 9 assists while Nic Batum poured in 20 points and 7 assists. Deron Williams had 15 points while Raymond Felton chipped in 9 points and 12 assists for the Mavericks. Dallas' bench outscored Charlotte's 31-19 led by David Lee with 12 points and 7 rebounds and Devin Harris contributed 12 points. The Mavericks improved to 34-33, tied with the Houston Rockets for the 7th seed in the West just half a game behind Portland Trailblazers 35-33. The Hornets dropped to 6th spot in the East with 37-29, half a game behind Atlanta Hawks 38-29. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Eric Biasbas. ![]() |
