NBA -- Shorthanded Hornets dump Knicks, 97-84 By Eric Biasbas PhilBoxing.com Sun, 24 Jan 2016 CHARLOTTE --- Even with a depleted line up, the Charlotte Hornets were still too much to handle for the listless New York Knicks. A huge third quarter led by the dynamic backcourt duo of Kemba Walker and Jeremy Lin helped Charlotte turned a close game into a blowout and brushed off New York, 97-84 on Saturday night at the Time Warner Cable Arena. Up by only 2 at the start of second half, the Hornets outscored the Knicks 32-13 in the third with Lin constantly penetrating the defense and drawing fouls. He ended up hitting 10-of-10 free throws for the game. He finished with 26 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Walker, after a slow start also had 26 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter to stave off the Knicks' rally. PJ Hairston, assigned primarily to defend Carmelo Anthony also had a great game. He had a couple of steals off Anthony and tallied 20 points and 10 rebounds. "We have guys who are very capable of stepping up and making plays," Walker said. "It's been fun these past few games. Hopefully we can stay consistent and try to keep winning" The Hornets won despite missing five key players, second leading scorer Nic Batum (toe), Cody Zeller (shoulder), Jeremy Lamb (toe), Al Jefferson (knee) and Michael Kidd Gilchrist (shoulder). After scoring 40 points and logging in 46 minutes a night before in an OT win in Orlando and 42 minutes in this game, Walker said he feels fine physically. " I'm good. I'm built for this. I worked really hard during the summer. I conditioned myself with my strength coach. I just want to win, whatever it takes. I don't care how many minutes it is. I'm going to go out there, I'm going to fight unitl the game is over." The Knicks were coming off two overtime games and a back to back after getting smothered by 28 points by the Clippers on Friday. "We just weren't playing with enough energy. We looked completely worn down and worn out," Knicks head coach Derek Fisher said. Knick's star Anthony was hardly a factor and sat out the whole fourth quarter with a sore left knee, by that time the Hornets had already built a 21 point lead. He finished with 9 points on 4-of-11 shooting. Both teams shot poorly from the field. Hornets hit 28-of-82 (34%) while Knicks shot 29-of-77 (37%). There was a big disparity from the free throw line. Hornets went 32-of-37, while Knicks only converted 19 of 32 attempts. Derrick Williams scored 19 points to lead the Knicks while rookie Kristaps Porzingis added 13 points. It was the third win in the last four games for the Hornets who improved their record to 21-23 while the Knicks fell to 22-24. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Eric Biasbas. |
