NBA -- Hornets fend off Bucks, 87-80 (PHOTOS) By Eric Biasbas PhilBoxing.com Mon, 30 Nov 2015 CHARLOTTE -- The Charlotte Hornets struggled all night but summoned just enough firepower in the last minute to hold off the Milwaukee Bucks, 87-80, on Sunday at the Time Warner Cable Arena . Kemba Walker had another sterling performance and finished with 22 points as the Hornets won for the fifth time in their seven-game homestand. With the score tied at 80-80, Nic Batum, who was having a lackluster game up to that point (9 turnovers, 4-13 FGs), hit a clutch three pointer with 45 seconds left. Bucks' head coach Jason Kidd commented, "Big time shot by a big time player. We switched, Batum just pulled up and shot the three." In the ensuing play, Cody Zeller had a steal off Kris Middleton's bad pass which led to Walker's push shot in the paint to make it 85-80 and sealed the Buck's fate. "It was not pretty but we fought hard. I think those are the kind of games that good teams win." Hornets head coach Steve Clifford told reporters."These last two games our defense has been a lot better." After a poor first quarter, the Hornets turned up their defense and held the Bucks to only 9 points in the second quarter. Milwaukee outscored Charlotte in every quarter except the second. "When you win 3 out of 4 quarters you tend to win NBA games. But unfortunately that second quarter we scored 9 points, so we have to look at that." coach Kidd said. "The effort was there, the energy was there. The understanding is you got to play four quarters and we just came up short in one of them." Hornets' leading rebounder and post-up specialist Al Jefferson left the game with five minutes left in the first quarter due to left calf strain and did not return. He will undergo an MRI Monday. The Hornets' bench responded well in his absence, outscoring the Bucks reserves, 34-15. Walker said, ' We have great depth. Guys are always willing to step up and make plays." Both teams shot poorly from the field, the Hornets converted 27 out-of-70 (38.6%) while the Bucks shot 33 out-of 82 (40.2%). However, the Hornets made 15 of 31 three point attempts (48.4%). Batum finished with 15 points while Marvin Williams added 12 points for the 10-7 Hornets. The 6-11 Bucks, who suffered their third straight loss, was paced by Kris Middleton with 19 points while Greg Monroe had 17 points and 12 rebounds. The Hornets will face a tough test when Steph Curry and the surging Golden State Warriors (18-0) visit Charlotte on Wednesday. The Bucks will try to bounce back when they host Denver Nuggets (6-11) on Monday. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Eric Biasbas. |
