PHILIPPINE NATIONAL GAMES VISAYAS QUALIFYING LEG By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Thu, 12 Nov 2015 SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, ANTIQUE - Some 1,000 athletes and officials joined the Philippine National Games Visayas Qualifying Leg which opened last Tuesday at the Evelio B. Javier Memorial Sports Complex in this capital town of the Province of Antique. This writer led the 60 athletes and officials of Maasin City which sent entries in archery, boxing, swimming, badminton, billiards, taekwando, chess, muay thai, pencak selat and athletics. This was the first time that the Philippine National Games was regionalized to screen the participants of the National Finals to be held possibly at Tuguegarao, Cagayan in February next year. Only the medalists of the regional qualifying legs will be allowed to play in the national competition with the national pool of athletes. In the previous years, athletes from different local government units including national team members and armed forces players were accepted directly to play in the national level without undergoing a regional elimination. The Philippine National Games (PNG) sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission and Philippine Olympic Committee was created to serve as the ultimate challenge for athletes age 16 and above to bring out the best of the national and emerging teams as well as to be the main source of possible composition of national pool of athletes that will compete in international tournaments such as the Southeast Asian Games, Asian Games and the Olympics. The PNG Luzon leg was held in Metro Manila last July 2-6, 2015 while the Mindanao leg was held in Pagadian City last September 10-14, 2015. The venue for the different Visayas games were athletics at the EBJ Memorial Sports Complex, archery at the Antique National School field, badminton at St. Anthony?s College, boxing at Macapagal-Arroyo Stadium, chess at the Department of Education rooftop, karatedo at Antique National School covered court, billiards at the San Jose Billiards Hall, arnis at Delegate Angel Salazar Elementary School, swimming at the Binirayan swimming pool, taekwondo at the Evelio B. Javier Gym, pencak silat at the University of Antique Sibalom Campus, weightlifting at the Evelio B. Javier Memorial Park, and Muay Thai at Assemblyman Segundo Moscoso Memorial School.
