NBA Playoffs -- Rose's deep 3 hands Bulls a 2-1 series lead By Anthony Rozic PhilBoxing.com Sat, 09 May 2015 CHICAGO -- Even on a late Friday night, the bank was open for Derrick Rose. The 6-foot-3 All-Star point guard Rose capped a 30-point night with a game-winning 3 off the glass that gave the Chicago Bulls a suspenseful 99-96 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night at the United Center. The thrilling Game 3 finish handed the Bulls a 2-1 series lead. They shoot for a 3-1 advantage when Game 4 resumes on Sunday afternoon (early Monday in Manila) also at the United Center. It was an up-and-down game for Rose, who made only 10 of 26 field goals. But the 2011 MVP converted 9 of 10 free throws, grabbed seven rebounds and dished seven assists. And he came through when it mattered the most. "I'm just thankful and grateful that my teammates gave me the ball. They believed in me down the stretch. They kept getting me the ball, kept encouraging me to play the way that I usually play. And no, I did not call glass," Rose told reporters at his post-game press conference. Jimmy Butler had 20 points and 8 boards and Mike Dunleavy added 16. Nikola Mirotic had 12 off the bench for Chicago which lost All-Star center Pau Gasol to a left hamstring strain and did not return after logging just 22 minutes and finishing with just 6 points and 4 rebounds. LeBron James topped the Cavs with 27 points, but the four-time MVP made only 8 of 25 shots and went just 1-for-7 from 3-point range. James did grab eight rebounds and distributed 14 assists. Cavs point guard Kyrie Irving didn't perform as efficiently. Irving made only 3-of-13 field goals and had zero assists against two turnovers. He ended up with just 11 points in 38 minutes. J.R. Smith returned from a 2-game suspension with 14 points off the bench for Cleveland. Smith set the stage for the dramatic finish by knotting the count at 96-96 in the final 10.6 seconds of play. Despite being hobbled by a groin injury, Iman Shumpert clocked 37 minutes for the Cavs and accounted for 8 points. Centers Timofey Mozgov and Tristan Thompson combined for 18 points and 20 rebounds. It was a defensive struggle as both teams couldn't find their rhythm offensively. The Cavs shot just 39 percent (32 of 82) while the Bulls went just 37.8 percent (34 of 90). Both clubs combined for only 20 of 55 3-point baskets. Even with Gasol playing short minutes due to injury, the Bulls still out-rebounded the Cavs, 54-39.
