BOXING DEATH ROW: THE LAST MEAL By Estace Yambot PhilBoxing.com Sun, 03 May 2015 Last night, many people watched the Superbowl of boxing - Mayweather vs Pacquiao, two of the most accomplished fighters of their generation if not of all time. The making of the fight took 5 years. The anticipation is incredible and the fighters do not have to do the usual promotional stunts since THE FIGHT was so huge there was no need for such. The build up was insane and the fight was even the topic on primetime television when boxing never gets the attention in mainstream television. It gained so much steam that it became a Hollywood Gala night and you can see the stars parade themselves on fight night even if they themselves have not seen a boxing match in their life. It is just that big and no one wants to miss it. Matter of fact, it is the single most significant event in Las Vegas infusing 433 million dollars to the economy not including the fans' hotel, airfare and other expenses. Give credit where credit is due but Mayweather is a savant of the sport. He did not dominate Pacquiao but he controlled the whole fight and dictated the pace. He was a calculating zard but not foolish to get himself in harm's way, and that's respect for Pacquiao. He was incredulously brilliant and so elusive he made Pacquiao confused and frustrated and bewildered. That is the mastery of Floyd Mayweather. Like him or not give the man his due. Rabid Pacquiao fans cry 'chicken Mayweather did not come to fight, all he did was run'. Say it if you will and not to diminish the greatness of Manny but our man was outclassed tonight. He fought gallantly and with a mindset of a warrior, he tried to come to get Floyd Mayweather to engage but Floyd had more on his arsenal than our brave and courageous hero. Mayweather during the gunfight did not stand at the front line with red uniform on and firing shots one at a time then reloading and be a sitting duck while he is being shot on. No he did not. He was a guerilla, setting traps and ambush. He was a war tactician and causing the most havoc but come out untouched. To hit and not get hit. That is the science of boxing. This is the validation of Floyd Mayweather in the ring and you have to give his genius some appreciation. Outside of it is another story. With all these hoopla, casual observers were drawn into the circus coughing up $100 a pop for a television pay per view out of curiosity and witness what is going on. People were expecting a fight, a show, that will satisfy their hard earned hundred bucks. But for a casual observer, the fight was not even a fight. For those who does not have a deeper knowledge of boxing, the spectacle was nothing but a boring fight. And that's the end of it, boxing's last meal. I am certain it was served with Pancit and Lumpia! And maybe a Lechon too! Click here to view a list of other articles written by Estace Yambot. |
