FIVE CHINKS IN MAYWEATHER?S ARMOUR

PhilBoxing.com

The Myth of Floyd?s Invulnerability

There?s a lot of talk about the invincibility and ring savvy of Floyd Mayweather Jr. His unblemished record of 47-0 speaks for itself. On paper the feat seems truly remarkable and is just 2 wins shy of matching Rocky Marciano?s record of 49-0. But is Floyd really that formidable? Lately, he claimed that he is ?The Greatest? raising a lot of eyebrows in the boxing community. Floyd may be the greatest defensive fighter off all time but he is human and is vulnerable in many ways. I counted 5 major weaknesses:

1. FEAR OF PACQUIAO: since time immemorial Floyd has always feared Pacquiao. In fact, he waited until he could find some kind of fragility in Pacquiao (which came in the form of a scary knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez) before deciding to fight the 8 division world champion. So evident is this fear that Floyd actually verbalized it in an interview with Bob Costas in an NBC show (on why he doesn?t want to fight Pacman)? ??I am in the game to win, not just inside the ring, but outside the ring?.My health is more important than anything.? He went on to further say ??I come first. Self preservation. I gotta worry about my family. If the fight don?t happen, so be it.? Mayweather then made every kind of excuse to duck Pacquiao but eventually gave in to the pressure and of course money.

2. INFERIOR POWER: nothing I think is more evident than the superior power that Pacquiao possesses over Floyd. If you look at what happened to Hatton, Cotto, Margarito, De la Hoya etc. all these guys had seriously disfigured faces after the fight with Pacquiao, on the other hand, they weren?t as battered with Floyd. This despite the fact that Manny was shorter and visibly smaller than most of them. In a TV program entitled Sport Science they measured the strength of Pacquiao?s punch. They found out that it?s equivalent to the force of getting hit by a SHOTGUN blast. Now, Floyd really has reason to be scared. Let us not forget though that Manny not Money has the ability to knockout an opponent with one single punch.

3. DIFFICULTY WITH SOUTHPAWS: In the same breadth that Manny has trouble with counter-punchers like Marquez & Mayweather. Mayweather also has difficulty dealing with southpaw boxers. Mayweather was floored by Zab Judah in the 2nd round of their fight referee Richard Steele however ruled it a slip. Zab is one of the southpaw sparring partners Floyd hired in preparation for his fight with Pacquiao and credible sources say that Floyd was knocked out by Zab with a single body punch during one of the sparring sessions.

4. VOLUME PUNCHING: This is most likely one of the most critical. Pacquiao according to Compubox averages 69 Punches per round if he connects just a little above the rate of Alvarez (in terms of power punches) when he fought Mayweather (which averaged 32%) and since he is much faster and shiftier we can make an argument that he can probably hit 35% (but he averaged this much against Rios who is easier to hit) of his punches against Floyd or let?s just be conservative and just say 30%. That?s about 20 punches per round and that?s enough to win the fight. On the other hand though Mayweather has a superior connect rate of 46% and if he throws about 35 punches per round that would sum up to about 16 punches per round. According to Al Bernstein and I agree with him that if Pacquiao averages 800 punches on that fight (that?s 67 per round) he will win. That?s true even if he only connects 25% of his punches per round.

5. LACK OF FAITH : According to Evander Holyfield boxing is 90% spiritual and 10% physical. So bold is the ?Real Deal? with his faith that he had a verse inscribed on his robe Phil 4:13 which states ?I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me?. The sweet science is filled with great champions who have strong faith in God like George Foreman who became world champ again 20 years after being beaten by Ali by knocking out a 27 year old Michael Moorer. Foreman (at age 45 then) is regarded as the oldest Heavyweight Champion in history. Pacquiao is a Christian & a great man of God and he has been preaching the good news everywhere. He is the first & only boxer in to become a world champ in 8 different weight divisions. This assures him a place in the boxing hall of fame. He humbly and recently proclaimed "I came from nothing into something and I owe EVERYTHING to GOD." Men of great faith rely on God for strength and believe that ?nothing is impossible with God.?

They say that this fight is a battle between good and evil. One fighter fights for Money while the other for God & Country. There you have it the 5 Chinks in Mayweather?s Armour. Which ones will come to play on May 2?only God knows!
