Kiamco Topples Appleton, Faces Taiwan's Cheng in Elite Round of 16 PhilBoxing.com Fri, 20 Feb 2015 Kiamco. GENERAL SANTOS CITY--Streaking Warren Kiamco of the Philippines upset World No. 5 Darren Appleton and maintained solid form to qualify first in the tough Round of 16 of the World 10-Ball Championships at the SM City Mall here. Despite the seemingly lopsided 11-5 score, Kiamco toiled hard and relied on solid breaks to reach relatively easy runouts and maintain the hot winning form that won him the Derby City 9-ball classic only last week in Louisville, Kentucky. "Nothing is easy here. Every shot is tough. You need a little luck to win," said the 44-year-old Kiamco, ranked 17th in the world of his chances of entering into the Magic 8. Getting in the way of that dream is young and dangerous Cheng Yu Hsuan of Chinese-Taipei, 27, and 95th in the world. Cheng easily disposed of compatriot Liu Ri Teng, 11-2, to arrange a showdown with Kiamco, who hails from Cebu. Another Filipino, Jundel Mazon, squandered a 10-4 lead, lost miserably and failed to qualify, losing to giant-killer Indonesian Irsa Nasution, 11-10. Nasution, the 27-year-old Jakarta native, has also claimed the scalp of World No. 7 and fourth seed Dennis Orcollo in his Round-of-32 match, 11-8, Thursday evening. Lee Van Corteza upset World No. 6 and third seed Albin Ouschan of Austria also late Thursday in Round-of-64 hostilities. He was locked in a fierce battle with another Taiwanese ace, Fu Che Wei, in his own bid to enter the Round-of-32, as of press time, as other Filipinos fell by the wayside. Legendary Francisco "Django" Bustamante had the smallest of mistakes and it was enough for David Alcaide of Spain to win, 11-9, in other featured Round-of-64 matches Thursday night. Other Filipinos playing separate Round of 32 matches Friday included Carlo Biado, Romeo Silvano, Johann Chua and Raymund Faraon. Alex Pagulayan, another Filipino playing under Canadian flag, was battling Korean Ryu Seung Woo. Later in the evening, tougher Round-of-16 matches would start pitting comebacking Marcus Chamat of Sweden who has brought down World No. 1 Chang Yu Lung of Chinese-Taipei in the Round-of-64. Chamat, 39, a native of Gavle, took a hard-earned trip to the Round-of-16 with a riveting 11-10 victory over another tough Taiwanese, Wu Kun Lin. "You need to break well in this tournament. I beat two great players in my last two games and I don't think I even made a mistake against them," said Chamat, who will yet tangle with another Taiwanese qualifier, Yang Ching Shun. Yang eked out a close 11-10 win over Baseth Mapandi to earn his Round-of-16 ticket. |
