NBA -- Hornets nip Knicks, 76-71 By Eric Biasbas PhilBoxing.com Mon, 26 Jan 2015 CHARLOTTE -- A night after suffering a humiliating 39-point loss at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Charlotte Hornets resumed their winning ways and toppled the visiting New York Knicks, 76-71 on Saturday at the Time Warner Cable Arena. It was another defense-oriented brawl which is now becoming common in Hornets' games. Both teams played without their superstars. Carmelo Anthony was held out to rest on the second night of a back-to-back while Kemba Walker was a late scratch due to his ailing left knee. Brian Roberts started in place of Walker and top-scored for the Hornets with 17 points including a step back jump shot to put them ahead 71-69 with 2:15 remaining. " What we've become is a very good defensive team and that's something we can rely on when things aren't going well on offense. That's something that carried us through," Roberts said. Al Jefferson didn't have a good night offensively (4 of 14 FG) but got a couple of timely buckets to help fend off the Knicks. " Two teams didn't shoot the ball well. One team found a way to win", he said. "It's an ugly win. We'll take it." The Hornets had a sluggish start and didn't take the lead until the 2:58 mark of the third quarter, 55-54. The Knicks, meanwhile, led by as many as 11 in the first half. Knicks head coach Derek Fisher said, "Our defense overall is decent. We just couldn't get the timely scores that we needed." Tim Hardaway, Jr. missed a 3 point shot that could have tied it up and Cole Aldrich turned the ball over in a loose ball play. Gerald Henderson was fouled and sank two charities for the final count, 76-71. Jefferson finished with nine points and seven blocks. Henderson had 14 points while Michael Kidd Gilchrist added 10 markers and eight boards. Tim Hardaway, Jr. led New York with 25 markers while Lance Thomas contributed 16. With the win, the Hornets (19-26) moved up to 8th spot in the Eastern Conference while the Knicks dropped to 8-37. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Eric Biasbas. |
