"Bata" Reyes, Biado Head Semis Cast in MP Cup RP Open 10-Ball PhilBoxing.com Fri, 12 Dec 2014 GENERAL SANTOS CITY--Legendary Efren "Bata" Reyes and World No. 7 Carlo Biado continued to show solid form and impeccable shot-making and advanced into the semifinals facing separate opponents in the MP (Manny Pacquiao) Cup Philippine Open 10-Ball billiards championship Friday here. The ageless Reyes, still sharp and composed at 60, blasted the 32-year-old Oliver Medenilla, 9-8, in a riveting quarterfinals knockout match that had a few hundred spectators clapping and gasping in awe, respect and reverence to this living icon at the SM City Mall. Reyes, still unbeaten in seven matches like Biado, was facing unheralded snooker expert Benjie Guevarra of Imus, Cavite in a bid to score another major victory in Philippine soil. Reyes's road to the semis was strewn with great challenges, beating Jerome Adolfo, Horace Angor, American Rodney Morris, his best friend Francisco "Django" Bustamante, John Morra of Canada and Medenilla. So respectful was Medenilla that he conceded defeat to Reyes in the deciding 17th game, not allowing Reyes to sink the final "10" ball, to the delight of the crowd. Biado, also unscathed, was facing the relatively unknown Demosthenes Pulpul in the other featured match of the evening. The 31-year-old Biado, who moved up to seventh in the current world standings, was simply oozing with class and finesse, beating Canadian Alex Pagulayan, 9-3, in the other quarterfinals match. Making it look so easy, Biado was congratulated by Pagulayan, who threw in the towel on the deciding 12th game with still two balls remaining on the table, making a strong statement for his title bid and the $13,000 top prize out of the $50,000 prize fund put up by Congressman and eight-time, eight-division boxing champion Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao, who will celebrate his 36th birthday this week, has added another $100,000 to the doubles event commencing on Saturday. Reyes and Guevarra were tied at 4-apiece as of press time. The 36-year-old Guevarra, a snooker player who has made Sabah, Malaysia his base for years now, is bidding for his first major billiards title. Likewise, Pulpul is trying to make a name for himself. He lost in the second round to Biado, 9-8, but strung up six straight wins over Gil Catamora, Jericho Banares, Leo Bayet, Roberto Gomez, Roland dela Cruz and Michael Feliciano.
