NBA -- Knicks hold off Hornets, 96-93 By Ben Paz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 04 Nov 2014 NEW YORK -- After a disappointing home season opener loss to the Chicago Bulls, the New York Knicks secured their first home win at Madison Square Garden Sunday night against the Charlotte Hornets, 96-93. The Knicks, aided by Carmelo Anthony's clutch shooting, improved to 2-1 for the season, a record that includes a road win against Lebron James' Cleveland Cavaliers. The fourth quarter started with four lead changes as the reserves of both teams battled to give their respective starters an edge in the final minutes of the game. Baskets were scarce due to a gritty defensive quarter from both sides that forced tough shots and costly turnovers. Fortunately for the Knicks, Anthony scored the 9 of the Knicks' 17 fourth quarters points, and with help from Iman Shumpert's huge three pointer that tied the game at 93-93. Kemba Walker had a chance to tie the game, but threw up an errant shot that Anthony rebounded and secured with 1.9 seconds left and proceeded to hit 1 of 2 free throws to seal the 3 point victory. "I think it is important to allow for a guy, like Carmelo who is a great closer and finisher of games, to have the energy level to do so," Derek Fisher commented after the game. Early in the opening quarter Anthony was the 40th player in NBA history to eclipse the 20,000 point mark. He ended with a game-high 28 points and puts him at 20,025 points. Amar'e Stoudemire had the Knicks' first double-double of the season posting 17 points and 10 boards. Shumpert added 15 points and 4 assists. The Charlotte Hornets fell to 1-2 to start the season despite four players with double digit scoring. Al Jefferson led the Hornets with 21 points. The backcourt, which consists of Walker and Lance Stephenson, chipped in 16 and 14 points respectively with Stephenson adding 8 assists. Gary Neal provided 17 points off the pine including a perfect 3-3 from deep. The New York Knicks host the Washington Wizards who are also 2-1 on Wednesday night at the Garden while Charlotte travels to New Orleans to play the 1-1 Pelicans.
