LUZON BOXING WEEK ROUNDUP

Santa Rosa, Laguna, April 21, 2017

The event held at the Paseo Brusmick Commercial Center produced 6 stoppages in 7 bouts with only the final fight ending in a decision. In the main event, Ernesto Saulong (Brusmick Boxing Stable) barely defeated Jestoni Autida (Penalosa Boxing Gym) in their 10-round junior featherweight bout by the scores of 95-94, 95-94, and 96-93. Saulong was the busier fighter in the first half of the fight and established a considerable lead in the scorecards. However, Autida dropped him in the 6th round with a well-timed left hook. Luckily for Saulong, that punch did not send him to dreamland and escaped with a decision win.

In the supporting main event, Rowel Rosia (Arci Boxing Stable) who once fought for the IBO flyweight title scored a 7th round TKO victory over the comebacking Benezer Alolod (Brusmick), himself a former Philippine junior flyweight champion. On paper, the match appeared to be even but Rosia just dominated his opponent scoring at will in the 6th round before dropping the latter in that round. This prompted Referee Carlo Baluyut to give a close watch on Alolod and cautioned his corner during the break. Soon after, in the 7th round, Referee Baluyut stopped the fight when it was apparent that Alolod can no longer reasonably protect himself from further damage, thus, awarding Rosia a TKO victory.

In another exciting bout, former OPBF minimum-weight champion Michael Landero (Olivares Boxing Stable) scored a TKO victory over former junior flyweight champion Renren Tesorio (Penalosa) when the latter quit in his stool at the start of the 4th round. It was a vicious fight where both fighters traded heavy punches and which ultimately took their toll on the clearly exhausted Tesorio who reportedly came to the fight following a bum stomach that further contributed to his exhaustion. The fight was held at the junior bantamweight division where the overweight Landero who came in at 118 lbs. wore the heavier 10 oz. gloves.

In another bout, Alvin Tayo (Olivares) scored a third round TKO over Rico Saonoy (I-M Boxing Gym) in a knock-down filled minimum weight bout. Saonoy drew first blood by sending Tayo to the canvas in the opening round. In the second round, it was Saonoy who took a trip to the floor but then evened things up by dropping Tayo for the second time. It was Tayo, however, who came up stronger in the round as he pummelled the heavily tiring Saonoy and sending him once more to the canvas. In the 3rd round, Tayo trapped Saonoy in the latter’s own corner while raining him with vicious punches to the body prompting Referee Elmo Coloma to give a halt to the bout.

Summarizing the results of the other bouts:

Prince Andrew Lauro (Tacy Macalos Boxing Stable) defeated Richard Quebic (Machete Boxing Gym) via a 1st round TKO in their flyweight bout.

Alvin Lagumbay of Bukidnon scored a knockdown each in the 1st and 2nd rounds en route to defeating Daffy Dempo (Tiger City Boxing Gym) via a second round TKO in their lightweight bout. Lagumbay is being trained by former IBF junior flyweight champion Tacy Macalos.

Reymar Condes (Olivares) defeated Arnel Antonio via a 3rd round TKO in their flyweight bout.

The professional boxing event was promoted by Engr. Ariel Araja. Matchmaker was Art Monis.

Bacoor, Cavite, April 22, 2017

This event marked the promotional debut of Joseph Quibral of Bacoor, Cavite and featuring four of his boxers. In the main event (scheduled for 8 rounds), Jerome Clavite (Quibors Stable) scored a knockout victory over the gutsy veteran Powell Balaba (Bohol Stable) in round 6 of their junior flyweight bout. Behind in the scorecards by a big margin, a big left found its way into Balaba’s jaw that sent him crashing to the canvas. He managed to beat the count but was dropped once again from which he would no longer get up.

Summarizing the results of the other bouts:

Alphoe Dagayloan (Quibors) defeated Romel Berwela (Elorde San Antonio) via a 2nd round TKO in a hotly-contested super-flyweight fight.

Edison Berwela (Elorde Las Pinas) scored a 1st round knock-out victory over the seemingly out of shape but still dangerous veteran Donriel Marcos (Black Scorpion Stable – Lanao del Norte) in their lightweight bout.

Francis Diaz (Quibors) defeated Louie Kent Padilla (Empire Boxing Gym) via a unanimous decision in their highly competitive junior-flyweight bout.

Ariston Aton (Quibors) scored a first round TKO over Joven Dauba (Fist and Feet Boxing Gym) in their minimum-weight fight.

Another Quibors boxer, Ar-ar Andales was set to fight Wilmar Diaz (Fist and Feet) but the bout was scratched from the professional card as the latter who came in at 118 lbs. weighed way above the contracted weight of 108 lbs. and the fight was reduced to an exhibition bout. Andales is the son of Boyet Andales, a prominent boxer in the 1990s whose most notable win was the PBF title

fight against Amado Cabato (a split decision) who would soon win the IBO lightweight title. The accomplishments of these past boxers is just but a testament that a Filipino fighter is capable of becoming a world champion.

Jimmy Vallares Jr. handled the card’s matchmaking.
