MARLON TAPALES: ANOTHER RISING STAR

By Gerry Peñalosa

Philippine boxing community has another potential world champion to watch out for and it’s Marlon Tapales of Wakee Salud Boxing Stable of Wakee Salud and Bong Yap. Tapales has won his Philippines Junior lightweight title’s first defense bout during the “Rumble sa Jungle” held at Zamboanga City which was sponsored by Congressman Erbie Fabian as his gift to his constituents for giving him fresh mandate as legislator. Tapales successfully defended his title against GAB current No. 7 contender Charlie Cabilla via unanimous decision and now posts a win-loss-draw record of 13-1-0.

I witnessed the title defense together with my wife and I have seen the transformation of our boxers especially in form and style. I saw the potential in Tapales and I saw another world boxing champion in the making. With just a bit of polishing, this kid will make it big in boxing. Hats off to premier Philippine boxing promoter Rex “Wakee” Salud and Bong Yap for taking Tapales into their stable. I am sure, Tapales is feeling the same excitement I once felt during my early years in boxing as part of Wakee’s stable.

Boxing is not only a strength and endurance sports, it also involves wit, intelligence, determination and a heart to win and be the best. Tapales is a raw talent but he has the passion, determination and is a warrior at heart. Being a part of Wakee’s stable is one of the best things which can happen in his boxing career. Given the right training and the right support, he can also bring honor and glory to the Philippines through boxing.

Big thank you also to those who continue to support boxing; the government, the sports commission, the boxing sanctioning organizers, the promoters and managers, the private corporations, the sports columnists/analysts, commentators and to all who gave their contributions in making boxing an honorable sport.

Me, I will continue to scout the countryside hoping to find the next Pinoy boxing superstar. I have spotted raw talents and am quite optimistic that another Pacquiao will emerge and that the likes of Wakee Salud and Bong Yap will always be there to guide the young boxer’s quest for greatness. To Marlon Tapales, continue your quest because there will always be angels to help you reach your goal.

A very pleasant day to the whole boxing community… keep smiling everyone!!!
