HEADS UP TO YOU MICHAEL KONCZ

This may come as surprise to many philboxing.com readers as in the past I have not written anything positive about Michael Koncz, the man directly in charge of MP Promotions.

In fact, it is for those articles that Koncz no longer allow me work the corner of Rodel Mayol as the cutman. Koncz believe that it was not fair for me to expose the ?secrets? of his inner workings with Mexican promoters and the way he treated the Filipino boxers under his care.

Therefore, he got back to me by taking me out the corner of Mayol.

In fact, I learned from good sources that Mayol will never fight again if he will insist in having me as his cutman.

In addition, he would not allow me again to be the cutman of the other MP boxers who fight in the US and Mexico as if I did get paid for the past services I provided for these boxers.

Except for the fights of Mayol in Mexico, I never got paid for providing my expertise as a cutman in all the fights of the MP boxers under Koncz.

But that is all water under the bridge. I have to move on. It?s not my loss anyway.

I only hope that if Mayol runs into another Omar Nino Romero incident where he was knockout after being fouled, those who are there now will be totally ready to take charge for the welfare of the boxer,

Not that I am getting old and thus getting soft, but there comes a time when one has to write something good about a certain person in response to the good deeds he has done to protect our Filipino fighters.

Case in point: The Mayol-Marquez Flyweight title fight in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico.

Reports indicate that Hernan ?Tyson ? Marquez, the title holder failed to make weight three times at the weight in. And when he stripped down to his birthday suit he barely made weight but with the help of his crew that surrounded the scale to get the weight results they needed.

Seeing all the cheating that went at the weight in, Koncz refused to allow Mayol to fight the overweight Marquez.

Koncz did not wish to jeopardize Mayol?s health versus an unfairly bigger and heavier Marquez.

For that I congratulate Koncz!

Although he has not done much lately to advance the careers of the MP boxers ( some say he is responsible for the demise of the careers of these boxers) his gutsy call was indeed the right call.

There was no point in allowing Mayol to fight a heavier fighter even if the Sonora Boxing Commission will fine Marquez 20% of his purse with the money going to Mayol.

Had he allowed Mayol to fight a heavier Marquez, for sure I will be the first one to hit him hard again.

Cheating at the scales in Mexico is nothing new.

One of their favorite tricks to disadvantage the visiting boxer by making it so uncomfortable for the boxer and his Team.

In one of the Mayol fights in Mexico the team was assigned a Volkswagen beetle in spite knowing that there were 5 of us on the team. Then they assigned us to a dressing room that is really a metal cargo container.

Then after the weigh-in, we were left in the plaza without a ride back to the hotel. We had to hitch a ride to get back to the hotel which was located in the next town.

In Mayol?s other fight when he stepped on the scales, the whole make-shift stage was empty of people so that the scale will stay steady and every ounce over the limit will be seen. They required Mayol to stay on the scale for over two minutes hoping for an over weight.

When the local boy got on the scale, the stage was full of people making it difficult for Mayol?s team let alone the commission to read the weight. The local boy got on the scale and quickly got down and someone shouted his weight. No one actually saw the real weight.

The Mayol-Marquez incident should be a lesson learned.

Filipinos going to Mexico to fight must be vigilant and tough. They should not trust the Mexican around them.

After all this is a fight and the truth it, none of those guys want the Filipino to win so they will go all out to see to it that their local boy will have all the advantages.
