LIONEL LEGARDA SINGWANGCHA INJURIES ARE A SHAME

Many bloggers and forum posters on many occasions criticized this writer every time he writes about mouthguards. He is peddling his products again, so they say. Little do these critics realize that when such articles are written, they are not about advertising a proven product. They are to continually raise awareness about the use of proper athletic mouthpieces so that boxers would not suffer dental injuries needlessly. And, if I have to take the flak for continually doing so, so be it.

Case in point:- Lionel Legarda Singwangcha. Based on reports from Dr Rene Bonsubre, Jr., Legarda lost his fight against Jetly Purisima last Saturday night at Maigo, Lanao del Norte.

The reason: Legarda was bleeding profusely from the mouth with a broken tooth.

Aljoe Jaro, his manager did not have much of a choice except to stop the fight to safeguard the well being of Legarda.

But, Jaro?s actions were a little too late.

Jaro could have totally prevented Legarda?s injuries had he paid more attention to his boxer?s welfare.

I refuse to believe that Jaro is not familiar with what his fighters are using in terms of mouthguards. For goodness? sake, he was an ex-boxer and he must know what a good well-fitted mouthpiece can do for a boxer.

And, on many occasions, when I see him in LA invariably we will end up talking about mouthguards and their importance in protecting boxers from injuries. In fact, I even gave him a name of a dental clinic at Cubao, Quezon City who can make mouthguards that have the same specifications as those I make in my office.

I am sure the extra cost of having custom made mouthguard for Legarda was not an issue this time around. That fellow Sinhwangcha was there and he could have easily paid for the mouthguard. I have seen this nice gentleman give bonus to Filipino boxers over and above their purse when they win, I see no reason why he could not have spent a few more pesos for a custom mouthguard.

Perhaps Jaro was extremely busy with the promotions that he forgot minor details like mouthguards for his boxers. Therefore, I can cut him a little slack and not totally blame him for Legarda?s injury.

However, let?s let Legarda?s bad luck be a lesson to Jaro and the rest of Filipino promoters, trainers and managers.

Gentlemen and Ladies, let me remind you once again that there are values in having your boxers use custom made dentist-fitted mouthguards.

If I can not get that through your heads, please look at Lionel Legarda. Surely, you would not like to see your son or your brother smile like him now!

Note: If anyone has a legitimate interest in knowing the name of the dental clinic in Cubao that does mouthguards, please e-mail me at eddelavega@aol.com. I will be more than glad to give the name of the dentist and the office phone number.
