THE PACQUIAO-MOSLEY TIFF - A GOOD FIGHT WITH GREAT ?RETURN ON INVESTMENT? PhilBoxing.com Wed, 22 Dec 2010   Los Angeles, CA: - A short while ago, as I sat down at home unwinding after hard day?s work at the office, I saw and heard the KNBC LA Channel 4 sportscaster mentioned that Pacquiao has agreed to meet Shane Mosley on May 7 at the MGM Grand Arena. I immediately sent a text message to Lee Samuels, the Top Rank PR man to verify the breaking news. Samuels, as efficient as he is, almost immediately replied to confirm that indeed, the fight is officially set. Samuels added that the fight is for Pacquiao?s WBO 147 lbs Welterweight title. Although many people in the business, respected scribes included, has denigrate the fight mainly because of Mosley?s age and his last two mediocre performances (a lose to Mayweather and a draw with Sergio Mora) I for one feel that it was a good choice by Team Pacquiao, particularly if based on ?return on investments?. In short, it is a safe fight with great financial returns. Mosley is still a good fighter and will bring his A game against Pacquiao because of the possibility of making tons of money if he scores an upset. Top Rank, according to reports has a say on the next two fights of Mosley, thus a re-match maybe possible if Mosley wins on May 7th. Therefore, possible the ROI for Mosley is robust. In so far as Pacquiao is concerned, the same is true. The fight with Mosley is a great investment with full-bodied returns. First, it?s a safe fight. As good as he is I do not personally think Mosley at this point in his career has the capability of scoring an upset over Pacquiao. Pacquiao knows it. Arum and Roach knows it too. I am certain, that is one of the many reasons why Mosley was chosen. Pacquiao can conceivably come out of the fight relative unscratched. In fact, it may be a short fight if he tags Mosley early. Second, Mosley, without doubt is a far better draw than Juan Manuel Marquez and Andre Berto, the other two pretenders to Pacquiao?s crowns. Mosley is from Southern California, the hot bed in California?s boxing scene. He has a tremendous following from the Los Angeles area who I am sure will take the short 3.5 hour drive to Las Vegas to see him fight. That of course is good news for the ?live gate?. Mosley also has a tremendous PPV draw- far better than Juan Manuel Marquez can do Marquez maybe a great Mexican boxer but sadly, he is not a PPV draw. Without doubt, Mosley had a lot more drawing power than Andre Berto who is a relatively unknown boxer outside of the die hard boxing fans. Mosley?s marquee stature will not only help push the live gate towards the full capacity of the MGM Grand Garden Arena but will also account for a huge PPV buys from all over the world. That is good news, particularly for HBO who will telecast the fight via PPV. Mosley?s draw combined with the horrendous number of fans that traditionally supports Pacquiao is therefore good for everyone concerned with putting the fight together. The fight will be a sell-out and the PPV will definitely go past 1.2 million buys. All of the above is good for Pacquiao?s ROI. Thirdly, Mosley will surely do his earnest to put up a good fight. He had been hunting for this fight for a very long time. Thus, for the fans it will be a good thing to see- good ROI for them as well, at least from the ?entertainment? aspect. The Pacquiao-Mosley fight without doubt will be a good fight with great ROI. It?s no small wonder, Team Pacquiao selected Mosley. Is that why they say - ?Pacman knows??.
