THE POTENTIAL MISMATCH INVOLVING A FILIPINO - A FOLLOW-UP PhilBoxing.com Wed, 18 Aug 2010 Yesterday, I wrote a story about a potential mismatch scheduled in Mexico City on the undercard of the Erik Morales vs. Willie Limond on September 11th involving Joan de Guia, a Filipino junior lightweight with a pathetic record of 7-10-4, 2KO. The Morales-Limond fight card is being handled by the Integrated Sports Media. It is for the WBC Diamond Belt, a belt created by the WBC to go over the head of the real WBC champion, Devon Alexander and increase their revenue. On the undercard, De Guia is fighting for the WBC Youth Featherweight title against an undefeated fighter with 16 KO?s, Juan Carlos Burgos. Today, as I walked into my office, my office manager handed me a note with a Philippine phone number to call back. ?They left a message for you, she said and they requested that you return the call. The caller is a friend who is also a fantastic writer. She writes for the ?Abante?, a local Philippine paper with a decent amount of readers. Her name is Virginia ?Virgie? Romano. Since I knew her well, I thought it would only be proper to call her back. Virgie stated that she wants to ?air their side? about the Joan De Guia caper. Apparently de Guia was a former ward of her husband Emil Romano but he was let go because he had some issues which the Romanos believe are detrimental for a boxer. ?We just want you to know that de Guia is no longer our boxer and we have no knowledge that he will be fighting in Mexico City until we read your PhilBoxing article. We agree with your assessment that he is going to be fed to the lions if ever he fights in Mexico in September. The kid has not trained since his last loss early this year and he has no trainer of record,? she stated. "We just don?t want our name dragged with the issue," she added. My first reaction was a big ?WOW?! According to Virgie, she called the Games and Amusement Board (GAB) at Makati City and she was informed that no one in that office knew that de Guia and whoever is arranging his fight in Mexico has not informed the GAB about the proposed fight. How in the world can a kid with a dismal record and without a registered manager get a title fight that is sanctioned by the WBC? More importantly, who is the heartless pimp(s) that made the arrangements for him to fight? That fellow must have a hell of a connection. We know not too many in the Philippines has that kind of international connection, so it?s either the fellow is an old time player in the game or perhaps a Johnny-come-lately. In any case, he/she deserves to be investigated so that the practice of making Filipino boxers helpless punching bags abroad for just a few dollars be stopped. And, why would WBC, the supposedly ?honorable? international sanctioning body sanction such a fight? What happen to your integrity, Senor Sulaiman? Was it overcome by the color of money? Something must really be fishy in this arrangement and GAB must investigate! Checking BOXREC, we were stunned to find out that the Burgos-de Guia fight is indeed scheduled. But, what was so unbelievable was Burgos was scheduled to fight again four (4) days after his fight with de Guia. Although the opponent is a TBA, the fight was supposed to happen at the Las Vegas Hilton on September 15, 2010. This goes to show that Burgos? handlers are so sure that he will blow away de Guia in a very short time so he would still be good to fight after four days. If that is not a true sign of a blatant mismatch, then I own the London Bridge! With these new findings, I appeal to the GAB to investigate and if indeed de Guia is involved with the potential mis-match, request the Bureau of Immigation to red flag de Guia and not allow him to leave the country to fight against Burgos. If de guia and his new handlers are not concerned about the possible hazards of being a live punching bag, then the government must step in and prevent him from potentially hurting himself.
