ANOTHER MISMATCH INVOLVING A FILIPINO -- WHEN WILL IT EVER END? PhilBoxing.com Tue, 17 Aug 2010 I don?t particularly enjoy posting stories critical of boxing sanctioning bodies and promoters. After all, it?s none of my business what they do to their reputation by putting together senseless matches to fill their miserable pockets. But there comes a time when one has to speak up if only to bring to the attention of the public the insensitive decisions these people often times make at the expense of boxers. So what else is new, you may ask? After all, ?padding of records? is part of boxing and nothing can be done about it, potential injuries to boxers notwithstanding. Of course I disagree, thus I am bringing this in the open. If nothing else, I hope those concerned will think twice and change their minds for the good of the boxers. For importantly, I hope the Philippine authorities will finally come to their senses and disallow the continuing exploitation of Filipino boxers by greedy promoters both local and abroad. Case in point:- Reports indicate that an unknown Filipino featherweight who we could easily dubbed as a ?bum? (man, I hate that term!) will be on the undercard of the September 11th Eric Morales-Willie Limond fight for the WBC vacant Diamond Super Lightweight title, one of the no-value titles concocted by the Sulaiman father and son tandem to increase their revenues. Filipino Joan de Guia, a featherweight with a pathetic record of 7-10-4, 2KO will face WBC CABOFE featherweight champion and undefeated slugger Juan Carlos ?Miniburgos? Burgos for 12 rounds for the WBC Youth Featherweight title. Five of de Guia?s losses were by knockout. For Pete?s sake, Burgos has a 24-0-0, 16 KO record! De Guia does not even have a puncher?s chance to win the fight. He might just as well hit the canvas after the first hit on the first few seconds of round No. 1 and go home with his money! That way, he will save himself from harm. De Guia, if his Boxrec postings are accurate has not beaten anyone of note. He fought three times during the first part of 2010 (February 19th, March 25th and April 24th) with three different fighters with a combined record of 24 wins, 11 losses and 5 draws. De Guia lost two and had 1 draw. How in the world can WBC sanction a title fight for a guy with such record and against an undefeated fighter with 16 KO victories? There is only one word for such action:- insane! The promoters of the proposed fight must be out of their minds or simply did not care if the fight is so skewed towards Burgos. I guess they wanted it that way. It?s just about the money and nothing else! Darn! There is absolutely no concern for the health of de Guia. I wonder how much are they paying the poor kid to agree to being ?slaughtered and fed to the lions.? I could not be too wrong if I say ? peanuts! The promoters might just as well pick a bum from the sidewalks of Mexico City to fight Burgos. After all, the results would be the same. And, it probably will be cheaper than flying de Guia to Mexico City. Who is de Guia?s handler anyway? The guy needs to be investigated! And, for WBC to sanction such fight and even award one of their worthless ?youth? titles is pure lunacy. And, I always thought the guy they call Don Jose and his son Mauricio were above that! I couldn?t be so wrong! I hope that people at the GAB Philippines particularly my friend Dr. Nasser Cruz, the GAB Boxing Chief, will take notice and pull out the license of de Guia if he or his handler(s) will allow the fight to happen.
